Pride before a fall ?
« on: November 30, 2011, 08:43:18 PM »
Well is there?    That is the question that should be being asked of the Chairman at Grimity Trinity.

To quote:

One thing I will do this year is ensure we finish above our neighbours!
In doing so we will make the play offs and either way I will be very proud!
We have been going through a rough patch and if that means i have to bring in more players then so be it.
We can do this and make history, up the blues!
Don't back against us, we can win it this weekend.

I love the one-way rivalry. They can try and build it up all they like but BUFC fans (or at least this one) don't see Trinity as anything other than another team we need to beat to get out of this league.

Their forum is hilarious they really hate us, any self-respecting Boston United fan should be indifferent towards them and I think most are.

I just cringe at the prospect of dropping points to a team thats never been promoted or relegated in the 43 years I've been on this rock.

They are the absolute definition of mid table mediocrity and they are the sort of rabble we should be visiting for pre season friendlies, not competing in the same league with. Of the many reasons to hate Evans and his mob the fact they left us at the same levels as teams like Gainsborough and Corby is right up there with near extinction and liquidation.

Rivals?

More like an irritating turd that takes 2 or 3 flushes to get down the U bend. The day I see Gainsborough Trinity as serious rivals will be the day I buy a Sheffield Wednesday shirt and walk through Boston in it.

History does indicate that Gainsborough are Boston United's biggest rivals. I compiled a list of all the club's competitive fixtures on my website and if you look at how often Boston United have played other teams you get the following table showing the top 20.

Not surprisingly it is topped by local rivals Gainsborough Trinity and Grantham Town who have been playing against Boston from the earliest days in the Midland League through to more recent times in the Northern Premier League or Southern League as well as regular encounters in the Lincs Senior Cup and the FA Cup.  Scarborough are another team that were also in the Midland League when Boston United was formed in 1933 and followed Boston into the Northern Premier League and the Conference. Lower down the table there is Denaby United who Boston played regularly throughout their Midland League days but haven’t met for almost 50 years. Both Grimsby Town and Lincoln City Reserves sides also feature. I have tried to distinguish between these reserve teams and the first teams. This is easy for Midland League games where it was always the reserve side but more blurred for Lincs Senior Cup games where sometimes the reserve side was fielded rather than the first team – particularly in more recent years.

And another statistic. Both sides have been in the same league in 40 seasons. Boston have finished in a higher position in 29 of those seasons. However, the last time that Gainsborough finished higher was 1968/9 - the opening year of the Northern Premier League.

Not as funny as the guy who had I 8 Boston on the back of his shirt in the bar before the game, was rather embarrasing !

I saw Ken's list earlier in the season and worked out then I'd then I'd been at ten of the games against teams we'd only played the once. I know this won't be the highest, indeed I don't think I even beat the one person I asked...

And P86, I think Ken's list is competitive games only, as for instance we played Rotherham in the cup in the early 80s and in a pre-season friendly a few years back and yet they're down as a team we've played just the once.
