Just a quick message in case you haven't heard.

David Baines died from cancer on Friday morning. He was a chemistry teacher and part-time referee who really loved, and was dedicated to, both his subject and his football.

RIP Mr Baines  :(

I found out through my brother who is friends with his son (also called David).

This has come as a real shock to me - I didn't even know he was ill. I don't know how old he was - he taught me about a decade ago and I put him at around late 30s then. His son is 21 now.

With regard to the funeral, this is what David Jnr has posted on his Facebook:

Quote
My father's funeral service will be at the Stump (St Botolph's church, Boston) on Monday 15th March at 1.45pm. All are welcome to attend. There is no parking at the Stump (though the nearby marketplace is a car park), so please arrive in time to find somewhere to park. Family flowers only please; donations to the Bobby Moore Fund either direct, through Carr's Funeral Directors, or in a collection box at the wake.

Very sad. He taught me up to Christmas of year 10, just three years ago, before moving on to Spalding Grammar I believe. A proper Boston Grammar School teacher who helped inspire those with a gift for chemistry, while acknowledging that academia wasn't everything for those without. I don't think he'd have held back his opinions with regards to the current messy Federation...

He could often be seen assessing referees in the Main Stand at York Street as well.

RIP.

I Remeber when he came to BGS, i think it was from Bradford.

He told us a story about being sat in his living room one night, watching telly, when there was a crash and a bang and local yobs came through the bay window and fecked off with his telly.....

We also went on a trip to salford university and called in at a footy match on the way home for him to referree.

Then there was the time one 6th form open night when we distilled the alcohol out of cheap beer all night, before drinkin it as we headed to the eagle for a few beers.

Fond Memories of a really nice bloke, unlike the load of bag throwing porno picture collecting nobs they have got there these days
