Rochdale (a)

I see we're going to be in a section of the Family Stand behind the goal tonight - and not in the Willbutts Lane Stand down the side of the pitch that we occupied during our Football League visits and in the FA Cup tie in 2019.

An even later postponement than last time. I'm pleased I decided not travel after last time but sorry for those who have done.

If you are going to do afternoon tweets saying the game is on and you haven't planned a pitch inspection then it just looks amateur if you then call it off 90 minutes before the start.

We're less than cheerful on the BUSA bus - we were 30 mins away! I quite agree with your comments re pitch inspections, John.

I could not agree more.

I'm in Rochdale as I write, but thankfully have only 16 miles to go home.

I'm just now in a McDonalds on the M62 side of town and bumped into four very angry fellow United  supporters.

For the second time I've shelled out £9-99 to DAZN for either abandoned or postponed game. Not as bad as travelling so far but annoying all the same!

I got refunded for Southend. I had a funny feeling about tonight so left it til the last minute - glad I did.

Are Rochdale becoming the new Spennymoor Town?

Speaking of which...

I have just got back. That's the second time I've got all the way to Rochdale for a late postponement. I was worried about the possibility of a postponement, and rang Rochdale at 12pm. I was told the match was definitely on. I will not be going a 3rd time.
I have removed the shell from my racing snail to make it go faster, if anything it's made it more sluggish.

100% agree that Rochdale are now the new Spennymoor Town! Embarrassing for the National League who are trying to make this competition appear professionally run yet incidents like this just give the appearance that some member clubs' administration and playing surfaces are just not up to the minimum expectations required.
Alan Partridge: "I bet I've got more friends than you've got cows. How many cows have you got?"
Farmer: "I've got 100 cows."
AP: "Well, I've got 104 friends!"

The thoughts of one Rochdale fan 'Daleaholic' this morning on their fans forum:-

"Enough is enough now. Since Simon Gauge became the chairman, we've constantly gone for the cheap option. This includes the pitch.

How on earth can the club achieve sustainability if the very tool needed to bring people in isn't fit for purpose. It's been neglected for far too long now and the patchwork repairs simply add to the problem to be honest. We've got a great centre circle... but the rest of the pitch is worse than Firgrove.

It's time for those who claim to be custodians of our club to actually look after it. Because as it stands, we're a laughing stock across social media and the football world.

It's embarrassing. Sort it or leave and let someone else come in who is capable of running a 'professional' football club."

It's not just the pitch that they should be embarrassed about. If there was any doubt about the game being on yesterday, which there clearly was, this should have been communicated much earlier.

I understand there can be sudden downpours that can put games at risk - no-one can control that. Had Banbury been called off the other year after that sudden storm an hour before kick-off, no-one would've blamed Banbury.

But what happened yesterday is unacceptable and the National League really need to get on top of it. They won't, of course, because they absolutely useless.

As of 3.30pm today, and according to the Rochdale Forum, there has been no further communication posted by Rochdale since last night's postponement was announced. Rochdale have a Fans Forum planned for tomorrow night, but some of their supporters are now wondering if it will even still go ahead. They want to confront whoever turns up from the Club about last night's debacle and are concerned what might happen next week when they have the rearranged local derby v. Oldham Athletic.

In the meantime, another post by a contributor sums up the feelings of a couple of Rochdale supporters I was talking to last night.

"Well, it didn’t take long for the 'feel good factor' generated on Saturday's win over Yeovil to be smashed did it?
Someone remarked elsewhere on the notable absence of directors and/or senior management in public areas after the announcement of the postponement.
I’d like to think that this was because they were all on some sort of conference call with the Ogden family.
There are two obvious issues emerging from this debacle:-
The first is the pitch, a topic explored extensively elsewhere.
The second is the total mishandling of the situation yesterday starting with misleading social announcements in the afternoon.
I was ready for calling for someone to fall on their sword last night but in the cold grey light of morning all I want is a thorough investigation and some sort of coherent explanation and an assurance that a repeat could never reoccur.
I don’t who I feel sorry for most:-
The Boston players, officials and supporters?
The Dale players and BJ and his staff who have had to frantically rearrange and replan?
The commercial staff who had the embarrassing job of explaining the mess to sponsors and people in hospitality?
All those fans who had set off or had actually even arrived at the ground?
Those casual matchday staff who were sent home without an expected wage?
Something is not right and I’m beginning to subscribe to the theory that some of the board are simply incapable of managing a penny raffle.
I include the chairman in this along with a survivor from the Bottomley era who somehow clings on plus the Trust rep. The latter is a lovely bloke but seems to suffering from the most obvious case of Stockholm Syndrome that I’ve ever seen.
Nothing posted on X either for 15 hours. There should be a fulsome apology and detailed explanation this morning surely?"
