And yet a month later we beat a very decent Workington side with a team cobbled together in record time.

Does anyone know who played for us in the friendly? I'd love to see a teamsheet!

Tommy Taylor did an incredible job in the circumstances. No, he was never going to be the guy to lead our progression once things had settled down, but he was the right guy at the right time.

"21 Jul Boston's pre-season friendlies began with a 2-1 defeat at AFC Stamford in front of 282 spectators. The Pilgrims fielded 20 different players during the match, including 15 triallists. Amongst the triallists were 33 year old Dundee United 'keeper Derek Stillie; Dean Nicholson - a scholar from West Bromwich Albion; and Paul Alexander - son of former Pilgrim and Lincoln City manager Keith Alexander. Stamford went into a 2-0 lead in the first half with both goals being scored by Leon Mettam. Boston pulled a goal back in the second half when Nicholson scored from the penalty spot following a foul on Dwayne Clarke. Former Pilgrims Nick Conroy, Daniel French and Tony Battersby turned out for Stamford."

I was thinking the same, but Marriott's moment of class just about saved it. One has to be fair and admit that given the conditions it was always going to be a war of attrition. And at least we won.

Bromsgrove rovers 2 boston united 0

It wasn't that the performance was lacking in effort, more than it was the first game of the season, where we had just appointed Peter Morris, pinched one of Kettering 's supposed best players and were thought to be one of the pre-season favourites.

Instead, we looked completely out of our depth. There were worse games later in the season, but by then, they were expected.

And I also didn't really get too down hearted by that fylde drubbing. My memory of it was that it was played in a very localised blizzard, on plastic, when our opponents had more suitable footwear to change into, and we didn't. Almost a comedy.
