Tough call after what Cully did last year. Think his big mistake was to not bring in players that were experienced enough in this really tough league. No disrespect to the players but that was my and others around me views when we started the season. What we need is someone who has experience at this level, and contacts to bring in 3 or 4 new experienced players to merge in with the squad. Let's hope David Newton can find the right manager but we've all got to get behind the new manager and players to stay in this league that's taken us a long time to back into.

It is always very sad to see anyone loose their job and I wish Cully and Bazza every good wish for the future. The one thing this does is scotch the thoughts of some that David Newton isn't bothered about staying in this league. We are second bottom of the league and something had to be done so I for one am pleased the chairman is taking action. Who will be brought in I have no idea but I am glad the club is showing it really cares and is hopefully doing what is needed to achieve future success.  UTP

My two penneth worth...

A little surprised at the timing. If we don't concede that last minute pen on Saturday then this sacking doesn't happen today in my opinion. I felt they had a little bit of credit in the bank (partly from last seasons amazing play-off win where Cully got it spot on tactically in all the fixtures and partly this recent uptick in form), since Gainsborough performances had improved a little and felt we were unlucky to have been coming out the wrong side of games. It was always going to be a tough job as we're one of few part-time/hybrid sides in the league. In any other industry it would be expected that a full-time employee would wipe the floor with a part-time but now for some reason we expect we should be beating full-time sides. That's down to the chairman and his decision for us not to go full-time but I appreciate that's dictated by money. I don't think Cully covered himself in glory during recent post-match pressers, he was quite snappy with whoever from Radio Lincs was interviewing him and began to look tired/beaten. Ultimately it's a results business and we're on a very poor run of them.

This next appointment is huge. If we do go down I think it's pretty unlikely we come straight back up so we really need some miracle to survive this year. Very interesting week or so ahead.

I was surprised by this news this afternoon but trust the chairman's decision is correct, hope we get a manaager that can keep us up. For all those saying he didn't want to go up, only in it for the money now you know the answer. This will be a costly decision he has made today and i hope he gets his reward.

It’s the 2 week break that has done it. Had we beaten Gainsborough and been in the cup this weekend then think he would still be here, not only from the lack of gap but the result may have had a knock on effect of confidence to get something from the 2 home games that followed.

I think he was looking tired and running low on ideas to try to make it work. If he had been given time then I would have been behind that as he had credit from last year but fully understand the reason for the change now. If we didn’t change now then any change would have been too late and we may as well have started preparing by for NLN football at Cmas. But the chairman has shown ambition by wanting to make a change to give us a chance to stay up and we need to support whoever is next in the hot seat

Shaun Pearson is assistant head coach at Grimsby at the moment. Wonder if we or he is interested in the job. Him and Martin Woods could make quite a team I reckon.

Plenty of chatter on the Grimsby forum about it, but I'm not sure taking a massive gamble on an unproven coach is really what's needed. Surely we'd want someone with a proven track record in this division?

We won’t know till the end of the season if DN has got this call right.  A new Manager keeps up and his decision is totally vindicated.  We go down and he’s made an expensive cock up.  Who would own a Football Club

I tend to agree Pete but taking a chance sometimes is what you have to do. Scotty and Hirst didn't let us down and nobody had heard of them at the time. Shaun may not even be interested, but managers with experience of this league are tough to find, what we do need is someone who can get the 3 or 4 really experienced players to come to the club to give us a fighting chance to stay in this league. Who would be a chairman, but David's record is pretty good so let's hope he can persuade the right manager to come on board.

They had literally just got Ilkeston promoted out of the division we were in.

I got the feeling that if the budget was big enough to bring in some experienced National League players IC would have done instead pre season signings were mostly players who played a level below last season or young players on loan from football league clubs who hadn't got much first team experience.

David's record isn't fairly good, its pretty average when it comes to appointing managers

Hits; Cully, Scott & Hurst

OK; Den, Elliott

Miss; Taylor, Cox, Lee, Drury, Murray

Our sales manager lives in and supports Hartlepool, he says don't touch Saarl with a barge pole, he assembled a good squad but had them playing some terrible stuff.  Its over to the Chairman now, this needs to be a solid appointment or we could have another decade plus in that regional league hell hole.

Wouldn't class Cully with Scott and Hurst, tbh. We were mediocre for most of last season and were lucky to sneak into the play-offs. I still think he's dining out on that "title" with King's Lynn but they were fading badly and likely would have been caught had it not been for Covid.

Also, considering the job he did in the circumstances he found himself, I think it's pretty harsh to call Tommy Taylor a miss!
