Mick Fixter RIP
« on: September 26, 2022, 09:24:25 AM »
Heard from my sister in Boston last night that a mutual friend informed her that Mick Fixter has passed away suddenly.

Mick, of course, was our matchday announcer and, as well as football, he was a great speedway fan.

I watched a fair few of BUFC's away matches stood alongside Mick, and chatted to him on those occasions he came to watch speedway at Belle Vue's National Speedway Stadium up here in Manchester.

Anyone watching the latest Premiership Speedway match on Eurosport from Peterborough would have spotted Mick, and his friend John, sat in the grandstand  when the cameras panned through the crowd.

Back at the end of last season my friend David & I were acknowledged jointly as Lifelong Pilgrims.  Mick gave us a great intro at the beginning of the match and popped into Club85 for a chat at the end.

Mick was a really nice chap, and sincere condolences to Mick's family and friends.

Terrible news. Mick was THE voice of Boston United. I never met him but I'm going to miss his voice on matchdays so much. RIP Mick.

Terrible news. So very sorry. Was at school with him and we regained contact at our football matches over many years. Sincere condolences to his family.

This came as a shock to me too - particularly as I watched the Lichfield game with him. As Pete says, Mick was THE voice of BUFC. I'm sure the board will find a way to honour him and keep alive his name at the club he loved so much and supported so steadfastly. RIP.

This is a shock. I knew him and Penny well, both more or less my age.

Sad news indeed, I also spoke to him at the Lichfield game and he seemed in good spirits. Remember seeing him at many away games in the past with his family.

Tragic news, my thoughts are with Penny and the family. I agree with Andy this has really knocked me as well. I always had a lot of time for Mick and enjoyed our chats when I saw him. We are all of an age and this really brings it home, especially for those of us fighting serious illness. Rest in peace Mick.

So sad. Never met Mick but always grateful for the clear tone of his announcements (especially at York St where the tannoy sound could be iffy). Condolences to his family and friends, RIP Mick.

Remember him not only from the football, but also from my time working at the Speedway in my younger days.
