 Spot the difference:

There are a lot!  One thing that springs to mind is that I might look up a little more next time I walk through the centre to see what is above the shops, as I don't remember much of it remaining from that photo in the main square.
So many people have come and gone, their faces fade as the years go by.
Yet I still recall as I wander on, as clear as the sun in the summer sky.

The second of the last two photos(the hand-tinted one)appears in a couple of history of Boston books, including the one by our own Roy Hackford of old Boston postcards.According to that source it is dated 1905.

Saw several people looking up at the facade today and pointing, now I know why  8)
Some very interesting photos.
Have they got a decent chef in Goodbarns, or is it standard pub grub?

Thanks in advance

There are a couple of good books of "Old Boston" photos.

"Boston - A Pictorial History" by Neil wright ISBN ref is 0-85033-937-5  - should be able to get that from Waterstones/ Amazon

and

"A Century of Boston" by David Cuppleditch ISBN ref 0-7509-3103-5 a W H Smith publication.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE :o

The colour tinted photo is given as circa 1905 whilst the B/W photo by Roy E Hackford is definitely dated as 1905. At first glance I thought both photos were from the same year but taken at different times. The layout of the fair is almost identical, however the angle of view is different for both pictures, the positioning of isolated people differ and of course the B/W photo has the central feature of smoke rising from a funnel.

However closer examination shows that the B/W photo has some details not in the tinted pic such as the 'black screening' placed behind the assembled crowd on the left that masks some of the buildings and the extra caravan near to the main roundabout. Also the roofing details of the show directly left of the crowd differs in the two photos. There are also some other subtle differences in the fair layout.

Suggests that the tinted photo is not 1905 but must be quite close - hence circa.

Anyway beats doing the Soduku but I must get out more! Has the snow melted yet!

The tinted one is obviously earlier because the building that became the Scala theatre and cinema, has not got the distinctive arched window. The shop is now Poundstretchers and if you go to the back of the shop, the floor retains the original rake. Behind the arched window there was a tea room/ cafe, it was also the foyer to the circle.

Think SL you may have been comparing the wrong two photos. The differences were between the tinted photo and the one above by Roy E Hackford. :)

Coming back to Bunyan's original photos, the sign on the Scala Theatre, which reads: Scala Pictures, Cafe was erected in 1929 and the theatre closed in 1940. That narrows the timescale a bit. Also the blinds on the International Stores are definitely 1930s-1950s vintage. I think we are looking at the club's ground at the end of its first or second season.

Photo apparently taken by Roy E Hackford in 1905 which as FT points out puts him well past his sell by date. May well be the grandfather of United's very own Roy Hackford.

Thanks Fairfax for your knowledgeable insight. I'm amazed at your precise dating for the Scala, etc. You must be either a theatre/cinema buff or President of the Local History Society. Agree with you about your conclusion of the date of pix. There are two further pix on http://www.bostonuk.com/gallery.php?type=Past%20Images&f=Boston that show two aerial views which if taken at the same time would put both pictures around 1930. The quality of the pix are not great but in the second pic the ground is in a similar stage of development as the one in the Goodbarns pic.

Haven't found the St. George's flag yet, BL, but then I've been too busy playing Where's Wally! Can't find him either! Oh Yes, just found the flag. Think Wally must have found it first then gone into the Still.
