Frickley

My other obsession apart from following the fortunes of Boston United is doing a bit of running - in particular parkruns. Sometimes Boston have been in the same league as Frickley Athletic, so I've had a few trips over to their ground in South Elmsall to see them play. There used to be a big colliery in Frickley (indeed the team used to be called Frickley Colliery) and a feature of the football matches was the huge slag heap adjacent to the ground. This is now Frickley Country Park and on Saturday it held its first parkrun (http://www.parkrun.org.uk/frickleycountry/course/). It looks like they've done an excellent job in turning an industrial waste ground into a rather nice country park.

I've been in the early 90's when the coal heap still stood. It completely overshadowed everything at the time.
He who would valiant be , 'gainst all disaster.
Let him in constancy follow the master.
There's no discouragement shall make him once relent
His first avowed intent, to be a Pilgrim.

John Bunyan, 1684

There used to be a door in the back of the stand were they could retrieve the ball from the slag heap. A white ball flew over the stand and a black one came back through the door 🚪  ;D
