A measuring device would help get the spray in the right place, which would appear essential to ensure fair play
10yds or  9.144m, which is different to 10 paces  :dan

What the ref says is 10 yards is what matters. The issue is that defensive walls creep towards the ball when the ref isn't looking - it will be obvious with the line on the pitch, if it happens.

They trialled this at a youth tournament last year, I thought then that it was a good idea, the refs also marked where the ball should be so it couldn't be moved forwards.

Why oh why on earth don't the referees do there job properly in the first place, they allow players to creep forwards after stupidly pacing out 10 paces, also they allow the player taking the free kick to move the ball to where he feels he would like to take it, This also goes on with throwins, how many times does a throwin be taken from where the ball went out of play, the player taking the throwin will walk 4or 5 yards to his teams advantage, what happens the ref might just point for him to go back in the direction to where it should be taken, then the player will run or walk down the touch line to where he wants it to be taken, You do not see this happening in rugby games, because the referees are in charge of the games, in football the players try and mostly succeed to run the game to there own rules, this all adds up to piss poor officials in football, rugby referees are respected by the players and fans.

According to rule 13, what matters is that the wall is 10yds from the ball.
Its amusing to hear the commentators going on about how the spray now means that the wall is in exactly the right place when most of the time it is not. The spray line itself could have already encroached by 6 inches to a foot or more, depending on the size of the ref who is doing the pacing!

Apparently only 5% of the freekicks taken so far were lawful according to FIFA's own rule 13, so why bother with the spray  ???
Some terrible reffing decisions in the quarter finals, with nailed-on penalty shouts being missed by refs...time to re-visit the tech-support department at FIFA maybe, if they've got one  :dan

But what percentage before this World Cup have been lawful? What's the quickest and easiest way to mark out 10 yards? A metre-wheel hooked to their shorts?

A similar percentage have been lawful before no doubt, but the difference now is that they are marking out the distance between the ball and the wall so why not get the full 10yds?

Options for a quick measurement include -
1/ a retractable tape measure,
2/ a 10yd retractable cord,
3/ an infra-red remote measurement device,
4/ a slight adjustment to the orbit of the nearest satelite to enable GPS measurement at all World Cup games.

1 to 3  are availabe at most DIY stores, apart from 2 which I just invented , 4 seems a little excessive even for the World Cup!
