I was at the game yesterday and Evans was getting loads of stick. Plenty of references to him being Scottish and a (C U Next Tuesday).

On a couple of occasions, after words between him and the Gillingham manager, Peter Taylor, the Gillingham fans were chanting for Peter Taylor to 'knock him out' - to which Peter applauded the fans on both occasions.

Good game  - Rotherham took the lead after 13 seconds and won it with just about the last kick of the game. Akinfenwa played and scored for Gillingham. I swear he is getting bigger - he is MASSIVE !

DL

ps. Gillingham is an absolute s***hole.

Why do people mix up racialism with nationality? To refer to someone's nationality is not racial abuse and any decent lawyer would have fun with that in court. As Fletch pointed out when a fellow convict complained that he had been called a Glaswegian black b*****d, he came from Glasgow, was undeniably dark-skinned and his parents weren't married. While I agree that referring to someone's colour in an otherwise derogatory statement is unquestionably racist, we must be careful to preserve our language so that it may be used as it has always been intended. Most Scots would be proud to be referred to, in the same way that I will take no offence if called English. Indeed I would be honoured to be recognised as a winner in the lottery of life.

If Scots are deemed to be an ethnic minority, then this is potentially racial abuse.  :bunny

I should think that the amount of abuse he gets is nearly all deserved as he brings it on himself with his antics,

I see that the Spalding manager got punched by a Rushden fan on Saturday, now that is abuse.

What ever happened to the saying
" sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me "

The racist umbrella is getting bigger and bigger, though it will have to be to get that fat scot c##t under it and all his baggage

Surely if you drop the word Scot then it can only be called verbal abuse not rascist abuse. I am not aware though that it is ethnic minority abuse to call someone fat especially as it appears that soon 90% of our population will be fat so will not be called a minority

"If Scots are deemed to be an ethnic minority, then this is potentially racial abuse."

But that is the whole point. The Scots are not a different ethnic group and therefore not a minority. The majority of us come from a mixture of the same Scandinavian or Northern European stock, and there is more similarity between the majority English and the Lowland Scots than between the latter and the Highlanders.

We have become used to using our language too loosely and then allowing self-interested groups to hijack perfectly acceptable words and twist their meanings, to the point that it is almost impossible to speak plain English any more without being accused of something. A classical example was when Clarkson was accused of racialism when referring to the inclination on a bridge as a slope. It's time we reclaimed our language. Most intelligent people can tell when someone is being genuinely racist without worrying about the actual words.

Scots have their roots in predominantly Caledonian Pictish, Scandinavian Vikings and a bit of Germanic Angle and celts which makes them a minority in England.  As you say though it is the intent behind the words that is important and the Evans' case there was a clear intent to insult him.  :bunny

Surely by that definition Scouse is a term a racial abuse.

Mind most of us here mean it that way.

My father was Scottish and my grandma wouldn't let him into her house 'cos he was a "foreigner", and that was back in the 1930s!! so nothing has changed.
