Boston: officially a crap town
« on: July 11, 2013, 06:07:00 PM »

http://www.craptownsreturns.co.uk/index.php

I can understand our place in the list because of the problems of recent years. But surely there are worse places? How on earth they include somewhere like York in this list but leave out somewhere like Corby is beyond me.

Anyway, discuss.....

A somewhat misleading headline.

There is no official list of crap towns.

Boston is on a list of nominees for appearing in a book called "Crap Towns Returns"

Towns have been mainly volunteered by people from the towns included.

They are looking for people to produce videos to either object to or confirm their town's selection on the list.

Burnham Market (Norfolk ) on the list in known as" little Chelsea " due to the influx of rich Londoners .
A couple of years ago when visiting a small building plot was on the market at £400k .
At various times at the Host hotel the likes of Amanda Holden , Stephen Fry , Simon Cowell and myself  ;)
are seen drinking and eating .

As an ex-resident of Boston, Maidenhead and Loughborough, this seems harsh on all three. Whoever drew up the list has obviously never been to Workington or Runcorn.

I find people who produce these books pretty moronic to be honest.

They look at a few reviews from professional moaners and cynics and take it as fact.

The town's got loads going for it, sadly the airheads and rabble rousers who run everything down are the ones you hear above the silent majority who love our town.

Hope we win the title! Atleast Mark Simmonds could put on his CV when he gets the push at the next election!

Sadly he'll squeak through because they'll be just enough people out there who won't fall for the 'gimmick' and 'protest' vote at a general election.

I've always voted Tory but at the next election I'll probably not, simply because he pays lip service to the voters and is a Tory lapdog happy with his cushy number in the F.O. while he brushes important issues in his constituency under the table.

Did I see Louth on the list, I wish they'd make their minds up.

Clearly no research was done on that list; no Barrow, Workington, Frickley or Gainsborough to name but a few I've visited through football?
So many people have come and gone, their faces fade as the years go by.
Yet I still recall as I wander on, as clear as the sun in the summer sky.

There are very few provincial Manc towns on that list.  There are some truly depressing places to visit on the edge of Manchester.  I take your Goole and raise you Lowestoft, it's town centre died in the 70's,  a town centre so vacant that even the pound shops are in out of town shopping centres.

Speaking of crap towns, if you want to read a light hearted, amusing account of an odyssey around the worst towns in Britain (in an Austin Maestro called Craig whilst being guided by Ozzy Osbourne on the Sat-Nav - "You have raiched your f-f-fookin dustinoition") then I can recommend Tim Moore's "You Are Awful (But I Like You)". It's much better than the Crap Towns books.

And yes he does go through Lincolnshire on the way from Great Yarmouth to Hull via Skegness, Grimsby, Goole, New Holland and SE830220. He only goes to Skegness because it's on his route and the name Skegness sounds as if it could be awful and has that "It's So Bracing" motto. He actually finds it's much better than it sounds.
