Best XI in Boston's History
« on: December 14, 2012, 08:36:23 PM »
I've trawled through the search as I know it's been discussed before, but what would the good people of Patter consider to be Boston United best XI of players through their history?

I'll start it off with the Goalie as that's easy and I've only ever really known 1 good one...

1. Bazza

Tim Wooding, Kenny Cramman, Gary Porter, Willie Gamble and Jackie Gallagher would probably not make the team.

Serious question, but Tim Wooding must be close to the starting XI as I can't remember a good right back for years and years.  Most of the Centre backs that have covered have exceeded those that have the position as their number 1 trade.

Seems this season may well be Bazza's last http://www.worksopguardian.co.uk/sport/local-sport/bastock-eyeing-grandstand-finish-1-5202878  If/when our season is dead and buried I might take in his last game.

Mentions his boy being a keeper in the article too, a position that might need filling if Haystead doesn't change his fortunes.

What an excellent thread.....I hope lots of people contribute....

IMO  the best BUFC goalie I have seen is...

MALCOLM  WHITE.....

He did play in a relatively successful team but he was an excellent keeper...very commanding in the air...a good shot stopper and he had excellent distribution with the ball....once he got established in the team he grew in confidence and  was at his peak perhaps the best non league goalie in the country....he was a super player IMO...

Can't really decide who was the best Utd keeper, I started off with Gerry Stewart, the Kevin Blackwell, John MacKenna and the Baz.

If really pushed I'd say Mac, who excelled in some truly mediocre teams.

Ok I bow to the greater knowledge age and opt for MacKenna.  Out of the players I've watched I'd consider Ellender, Hardy maybe, Clare and Cook as possibles for the side.  I really struggle for a right and left back that I remember with fondness and the midfield hasn't really had many iconic players to remember.

Doesn't that depend at what level the team were playing at, at the time. I seem to remember Steve Thompson, Dave Adamson and Albert Phelan being about as good as it got at NPL level when I came here in 1977. Once Boston were 2-0 up, the game was more or less over. A bit later I remember Colin Garwood having a real talent, until he got his leg broken.

Could say the same of Millsons double break.  He cleaned up at the player of the year awards and looked good for having a team built around his young talent.

Best goalie , Ray Middleton .  think he was capped at England B level when England had an abundance of good keepers .
