The problem at Droylsden was that it was a 4-5-1 too often.. SWD was wasted on the wing, leaving Mikel isolated

There's a comment on this thread about us not playing that badly at Droylsden until we went behind and I'd agree.  If Shaun had scored his early header (a sitter by his standards) and Spencer's shot had been either side of the keeper, we'd have been in front at half time - different game.

Consider that McKeown, Murphy and Pearson were struggling with injuries, and Burge and Mikel weren't match fit.  Also, Mikel often struggled when he started a game, especially against a decent team.

Playing 4-3-3 properly should not mean SWD on the wing - it should mean SWD and Yates/Newsham playing more floating roles alongside DD as central striker so that they are difficult to mark and can create space for themselves and others.  The way we played it at Droylsden makes you wonder if we have the players who can adapt to 4-3-3, but it could be an option we consider for certain matches.

We tried it when scott and hurst first came but it didn't really work because the style we played resulting in us having no width and we didn't really kick on last year until we played 4 4 2. However im not saying it wouldn't work now the players are more use to each other, we had Church, Sleath and Camm all playing too close together and the full backs weren't pushing on enough, Jame Clarke struggled to fit in to the system, the only player who looked comfortable with the set up going forward was Newsham as he played there for them with Ilkeston the year before. Clarke and Camm were the big loosers as they didn't fit into the system and didn't feature much when we went to 4 4 2 being replaced by better players such as SWD and Yates.
