Old Boston United team photo

I've been sent an old Boston United team photo by the Chesterfield club historian. He would be interested in knowing the date it was taken and who is in it. Rather embarassingly at the moment I can't identify any of the players in the photo! So can any of you help out here?



It looks like Ernest Malkinson in the suit on the left and Ray Middleton in the suit on the right. The kit is typical mid 50s which would tie in with Ray Middleton's time as player-manager. But I can't see any of the regulars from those seasons, e.g. Geoff Snade, Dave Miller, Tommy Lowder, etc.

Have you thought it could be the reserves of 57/8 or 58/9 Ken?

It could well be the 'possibles' who played the probables in either of the pre season games or it could be the Lincs League side from either season.

Second from left at back may be Jack Duthoit?

Showed my dad this photo yesterday and he remembers the team as follows:-
Hackett/Warnes  GK
Duthoit
Fisher
Bloxham
Smith
Lowden
Freeman
Hall
Kurz( possibly front row holding the ball)
Wheeler
Lowder

I'm fairly convinced now that Jack Duthoit is the fourth person from the left at the back, Tommy Louden is the third person from the right on the back and next to him is trainer W.Toynton. Alex Bloxham is in the front row on the left. If Freddie Kurz is in there he may be the player between the keeper and Tommy Louden.

So given womble's response which has those players listed in it, it looks like it could be a photo of a team from the 1952/3 season. But what is Ray Middleton doing there?! He didn't come to Boston until 1954. The Chesterfield historian reckons the player holding the ball looks like John Evans who joined us from Chesterfield in 1957 when Ray Middleton was manager.

So there are still a few loose ends need sorting out. Any suggestions?! Perhaps a team put together for a testimonial for someone in 1957 made up mainly of Boston players from 1952/3.
