Pilgrims to cash in on Setanta demise

Rob Scott

Wednesday, 9am - BOSTON United reckon the strength of their squad could be boosted by the demise of TV network Setanta Sports.
The Irish broadcaster – which has deals to screen several football divisions including the Blue Square Premier – went in to administration last week after failing to make payments to a number of sporting organisations.

The Premier League and the Scottish Premier League were among those they failed to pay – while the Conference is now left without a TV deal.

Although he was not celebrating the channel's demise, Pilgrims joint-boss Rob Scott pointed out how the station's collapse could favour him and fellow manager Paul Hurst as they attempt to build a successful squad on a tight budget.

"It will affect the Conference – I understand each club there is looking to lose out on about £70,000," he said.

"It will affect their budgets, and players at that level expecting good money may find it's not around any more.

"That could have an affect at UniBond level as well."

Hurst and Scott currently have a squad of seven – but believe their numbers will be added to soon.

Scott believes we are now entering the time of the summer where the clubs begin to hold the aces.

He added: "There were players we were interested in who wanted wages we couldn't afford.

"But those who haven't got clubs yet have started coming to us and talking about amounts of money similar to what we're willing to pay.

"As non-league footballers don't all get paid in the summer, a lot don't feel the need to sign up to a club as soon as possible and try to get better deals.

"But it happens across football.

"I was talking to my brother (Brentford manager Andy) and he was telling me he's got players demanding silly money.

"The longer the summer goes on the more chance we have of getting better players for less."

Pilgrims chairman David Newton is not putting any pressure on managers to create a squad in the immediate future.

He told The Standard: "They've signed some very good players, well within the budget."

Scott Loach could find himself playing for England in the European Under 21 Championships Final against Germany.
He is already the first former Boston Town player to win international honours.
Loach one of three goalkeepers in Stuart Pearce's squad in Sweden and he featued in the group match against the Germans.
First choice keeper Joe Hart is suspended for the final after receving two yellow cards.
Pearce must now choose whether to select Loach or Peterborough's Joe Lewis between the sticks.
Loach made 18 appearances for Boston Town in two loan spells from Lincoln City in 2005.
He was signed by Watford when they were promoted to the Premier League in the summer of 2006.

Sean Cann turns down Boston United to stick with Lincoln United
07:00 - 26 June 2009

Sean Cann.Lincoln United hotshot Sean Cann has snubbed the chance to join county rivals Boston United in the UniBond League Premier Division, and is staying at Ashby Avenue.

The prolific striker scored 22 goals for the Whites last season as Seamus Lawless's side narrowly missed out on the UniBond League Division One (South) play-offs.

His form was such that he was offered the chance to join the Pilgrims under new-look management team Paul Hurst and Rob Scott as the duo look to plot Boston's route back to Blue Square North.

However, Cann, who has also played for Lincoln Moorlands Railway, elected to stay with the Whites, much to the delight of manager Lawless, who has also signed wingers Rob Lund from Moorlands and Matt Lunn from Sleaford Town.

"Boston came in for Sean, but we have managed to persuade him to stay" said Lawless.

"This is a big coup for the club as they offered him a brilliant deal.

"He scored something like 22 goals in 23 games for the club last season, so for us to be able to hang on to him is tremendous news."

Scott defends actions after Boston clearout
07:00 - 09 June 2009

Boston United joint manager Rob Scott.Boston United joint-manager Rob Scott has defended himself and fellow boss Paul Hurst following the mass clear-out of last season's squad at York Street.

The new management duo have decided to keep only Aaron Butcher, Adam Millson and Liam Parker on the Pilgrims' books.

However, following the release of the majority of the squad that narrowly avoided relegation from the UniBond League Premier Division last season, a number of players were said to be unhappy that they had not been contacted by either of the former Rotherham United defenders, writes Chris Brammer.

However, Scott, who said the club were looking to bring in two more players this week following the arrival of Mark Camm, denied this was the case.

"As far as we're concerned, we contacted 99 per cent of last season's squad" said Scott.

"Whether they called us back was entirely up to them, we were not going to chase them.

"We left messages with players we were not able to contact, on the numbers we had been given and we tried everyone.

"We did not know anyone from last season and we did not owe the players a phone call, but I have been a player and I know how players like to be treated" added Scott, who confirmed that the club would continue to train at RAF Cranwell next season.
