When Boston played Ilkeston at York Street towards the tail end of the season I thought the blond-haired player in the Ilkeston midfield looked like a good player - so much so that I remembered his name from the programme ... Ben Pringle.

Soon after the appointment of Rob Scott and Paul Hurst several people also pointed out on this forum that they'd been impressed by Pringle and would like to see him follow the new managers to York Street.

Lo and behold we then learned that Nigel Clough had snapped him up for Derby County. It probably wasn't that surprising, but somehow a bit reassuring that us mere fans could "pick a player" from watching just ninety minutes.

Anyway, the two new managers set about releasing virtually the whole of the first team squad, leaving ourselves with just Liam Parker and Aaron Butcher. The whole current scenario reminds me very much of the start of the Tommy Taylor era when we had just Paul Ellender and Stewart Talbot, and I causally had a look back through the archives to Tommy's first game in charge away at Stamford.

Here's the match report...

Look at Boston United's side in the first half ... Ben bloody Pringle!

I was never Tommy Taylor's biggest fan. I thought he played too many players out of position, made strange substitutions and lacked charisma when talking to the media. I also thought he filled our squad with a bunch of overpaid underperformers, as clearly was evidenced last season. And I can't remember the Town End ever singing "You're not fit to wear the shirt" under the stewardship of any other manager. But to cap it all it now it emerges that he also failed to sign one player who had undoubted talent and potentially could one day have cleared a lot of Boston's debts single-handedly, despite the fact that that player appeared right in front of Tommy's nose in a Boston United shirt!

Well done Tommy!

We also had Derek Stillie in goal that day - who ended up at at Gillingham in League 1
