The B-Ark / Re: Pilgrims' hopes for 2018

It would be nice to see some work start on the new ground, that would put my mind at rest.  On the field it would be nice if we could mount a challenge for the playoffs.

CE must be Manager of the Month in our league with 4 wins out 4.  Only Kidderminster come close with 3 wins and 2 draws (1 one of the wins was beating York in the FAC).  BPA 3 wins and a lose.

If you factor in our starting league position then it should be an even stronger case. The recognition would be nice but I can’t say I’d lose any sleep if it went elsewhere.

Nor would Craig Elliott, as the award is often the 'kiss of death'.

Yes it often seems to work out that way, let’s hope he doesn’t get it, even if he does deserve it!

The B-Ark / Re: Boxing Day v Trinity

Really enjoyed the game today.
Not sure about the MOM though, personally i'd have gone for Ben Middleton, or Reece Thompson.
Ben was a rock in defence and although Reece didn't score, he worked his socks off and never gave the defenders a moments peace.
All in all an enjoyable game and three big points.
Well done CE and all the lads.

I thought Middleton played well too, particularly after taking a bad knock in the face early on. Overall a decent result and nice to keep the winning run going. If we win at Gainsborough on New Year’s Day, are we in with an outside shot at the playoffs?

It doesnt work, Reduced matches for example the past 2 seasons have only reduced income, Boxing day is a important income stream for the club and with 3oo+ getting in for free it be  massive decrease

How do you know? There is no metric that allows you to measure the effectiveness of these kind of promotions in terms of their true aim, which is to cultivate new supporters. I can offer some anecdotal evidence though.

As a young 13 year old, many years ago I was handed a free ticket on one of the clubs promotions via school. I hadn’t considered coming to a Boston match before, but I was hooked after one game and came to every single match afterwards for about 5 years. I bought plenty of merchandise over the years and even persuaded a whole group of friends to come along. I visit less nowadays but I’ve passed my passion on to my kids who are now avid fans themselves. That free ticket may have cost the club £5 in lost revenue back in 1993, but it’s been paid back and then some.

My point is that these type’s of promotions are very much slow burners and are unlikely to yield obvious short term results. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do them though.  In this day and age with all the distractions kids have we should be working even harder to attract the next generation of fans if we want to survive.

One final point, re Alfreron, I don’t think it’s a good idea to point at a poorly run club and give ourselves a pat on the back. We should be comparing ourselves to the best and realise we are not competing with the likes of Alfreton for fans. We are competing with Smart Phones, X Boxes, Televised matches and all the other things kids can do nowadays. If we want to compete with that we have to think outside the box and offer an excellent product. Or die.

It was mentioned several times on twitter last time we did match day reductions on twitter by a not those close to the club but those in the club. I do follow our General manager and media outlets

I think you missed my point. My point was that it is impossible to judge the short term or long term effectiveness of these kind of promotions with only attendance figures. You simply don’t have the data to make that judgement.

If you look at the game to which the promotion applies in isolation, then perhaps you’ll make a loss.  My own story provides an example of this. The club lost £5 on match day, but as I watched another 10 games over the remainder of the season, each at £5, then over the course of the season they actually made a £45 profit out of it. This wouldn’t show up in the attendance figures, but clearly it was a good investment. Both in the short term and the long term.

I disagree about it being a luxury, I think it’s actually a neccesity. You simply have to keep seeding the next generation of fans continuously to ensure the long term survival of the club. Watching football is an expensive leisure activity, taking for granted that we will always have 1000+ hardcore fans turn up and doing nothing to attract new ones is a dangerous game in my opinion.

Willis beaten from 20 yards again :-\
I'm not a Willis fan, but i was sat right behind the line of the shot. Only just inside the post, and well hit. A good goal rather than an error by the keeper in my book. Two brilliant second half saves more than made up for the goal, whether or not he was or wasn't to blame.

I agree, I was also dead in line with it and it was a really well hit shot. I don’t think It would be fair to blame the keeper at all. Sometimes you just have to applaud a good goal.

No. He had a relatively successful period with us previously, but ultimately seemed to have run out of ideas by the end. And besides, managers returning rarely seem to be as successful second time around.

At this club we have a habit of looking to the past, whether it be former players or managers. I’d like to see us show a bit more imagination. I’m sure there are plenty of eligible candidates.

The B-Ark / Re: KARL HAWLEY...

Can anyone remember when Karl Hawley played against Boston and he had Michael Bridges, formerly Leeds United, up front with him, i cannott remeber the score but we got hammered, and these two I think scored two each, pure class if my memory is right, so Karl might not be all pace now but hes been there and done it so still good to have around the team/bench and management.

I can remember him playing against us for Carlisle (I think) when he was leading scorer in League 2 and attracting interest from higher up. I seem to remember him being quite a handful back then.

Constant comparisons to the previous managers results are both unhelpful and unfair in my opinion. There were plenty of times during Greenes tenure when his sides put in absolutely hopeless performances that made you feel like we had no chance of ever competing. However, he was allowed time to rectify things and managed to turn things around.

Whatever you think of Greene (personally, I liked him and was sad to see him go), his tenure as Boston United manager is over and he is now firmly in the clubs past. Let's look to the future under our new coach and give him our patience and support to try and turn things around.

There will always be a clamour for the coach to be replaced when things are going wrong, but as Green Hats Mate was always fond of saying during the exact same debate over Dennis Greene, who would we replace him with?

Correct ,   also to add another posters reminder ,,,, the grass is not always greener .    Sadly it's too late when it hits home .
Only opens up a opportunity for failed managers to send another CV out .

I did not like Greene ,  on a business visit to my home he introduced himself as BUFC manager , I did not take up conversation with him .
But very sad to see him leave .

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. It is said that Alex Ferguson was one result from losing his job. Perhaps if they had lost that day, fans would be still be cursing their clubs error in giving him so long to prove himself without having had any success in return.

It's time to forget about Greene now and focus on trying to support Adam Murray in making a success of it in this job. After all, it's in all of our interests. Some of us will be proved right and some wrong. Who cares? I just want Boston UNITED to be successful personally.

We don't have the luxury of throwing cash at the problem so we are stuck with trying to build from the ground up with an as yet unproven manager. If that is going to be successful it will take time, patience and plenty of support.

I'd have taken Ed over David any day of the week. What's more, I would have taken him over Cameron and I'd take him over May too. If one thing has been proven it's that Tory promises of providing "strong and stabl" governments and avoiding "coalitions of chaos" have been shown to be comically wide of the mark.

It's bloody typical really. You wait 300 years for the worst Prime Minister in history then 2 turn up together!
