The B-Ark / Re: Jones and Spriggs

You dont seem to realise the point. Maybe we did maybe we didnt offer more money. The point is money isnt the only reason people come to Boston. You always here players saying they jumped at the chance to play for boston. All jones said was it was a good contract. Meaning they are paying him more football had nothing to do with it. Fair play to the lad for being honest, but dont think if you had offered him the same money he would have left us

Think you will find that money is the main reason players come to Boston, same as all clubs.

Footballers are notoriously fickle, and will go to the best offer. That is not always the most money, sometimes it's the manager, and sometimes the location (eg a player based in Manchester, would prefer Stalybridge to say Corby)

Clubs are also fickle, and soon get rid of players who are not good enough, or cost too much, or are disruptive etc, etc,

Jones is a footballer plying his trade, and Trinity made him a better offer than the one he was on. Rumour has it that Drury offered to match the wages on offer out of his own pocket ( really?) but a contract until end of next season is better than the end of next week.

Interesting changes. I have always though Jones was a good player and am sorry to see him go. However these things happen in non league football when daft money is banded about by a club that is determined to try and get one over Boston Utd. We all know that we are a proper football club and I think Mark will realise this in time, but from the offer that was made you cannot blame the lad. I hope this signing of Steve Spriggs does happen -- he sounds a direct and speedy winger that scores plenty of goals- just what we need. Cant remember the last similar winger -- what about Gordon Hughes, Stuart Hamill, Eric Lister even-- thats showing my age!!

Good luck to the lad-- I have to say I am still not absolutely sure about Graham Drury, allthough he seems to be 100% Boston Utd and the signings so far look very promising. I do know that he is a far better prospect than Jason Lee-- what players if any would he have brought in?

So, how did Jones end up at Boston? Surely not because you offered him a better deal than the one he was on?

Drury is 100% for which ever team is paying his wages, but the bullshit is greater than the results in his previous jobs. ( he talks a better game than his teams produce)

Mayo was useless when he played for us,( may be Littles influence) but his default setting was to run 30 yards with the ball, and the launch it in the general direction of the opposition centre half.

If we're competing with Spalding for players it really is proof we've reached our nadir....... :-\

But hopefully Gainsborough will get bummed in the Conference and come back down in abject shame, there's no interest in the town for a football club playing at that level and promotion will prove that. In 3 years they'll be back to lower mid table Conference North.

Thanks for that vote of confidence

Boston,           local pop 64 600 (2011 census). Average crowd 2012/13 - 848.

Gainsborough, local pop 20 110.                       Average crowd 2012/13 - 530

Interest per populous?...... Well you do the maths

Yes but a key point you have ommitted is the fortunes of our clubs.

In the past few years you have had a chairman who has thrown money at every money grabbing journeyman going, an ex premiership manager and every half decent player of ours he can get his grubby little hands on.  For the lavish outlay he has finally in the last two years brought you two successive play off pushes with an appearance in th final last year I believe and now a run at the trophy.  Well done, I'm happy for you and wish you well.

In contrast here at Boston we have lost our league status whilst finding ourselves pariahs thanks to the actions of a man who's name I won't mention.  We then face the indignity of being demoted a league so essentially a double relegation.  One season later and still happy to have a club we then find ourselves demoted again.  We had a brief respite of modest success followed by underachievement and mediocrity for the past season and a half.

But guess what? We still got significantly higher attendances than you every season.  And if we had a decent tilt at the playoffs we'd be back to at least double your average.

I wouldn't get too excited, let's face it, this is about as good as its been for you in the past 50 years and you've paid through the nose for it. You are only averaging 500 odd.  As a club who've always been used to being in the mix we've had a period of being in the relative wilderness and almost lost our club, and still getting 800 odd.

Having worked in Gainsborough last year I can tell you no one I worked with knew the local club were in the play offs and most shockingly, didnt care when I told them. I take my hat off to Mr Swann for what he's doing for his local club (although i don't respect his methods), but he's fighting an up hill battle.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good rant.

Brian Little certainly screwed the club over, with has been journeymen on their final pay days, but that was through incompetence on his part, rather than malice.

Our clubs are similar in the fact that they are both controlled by millionaire chairmen, and have been ridiculed by dubious management appointments. Our chairman is continuing to invest in the club, yours is managing the situation.

We should both be thankful for their continued support.

Our chairman has stated that our budget has been reduced by 45% since BL, and accounts show this. Your chairman stated that your budget is in the top five for the division. Chester, Guiseley, Halifax, and Brackley should be the four biggest........

Think you have made a mistake with Mark Jones, he should have had a contract, and even at the last minute still wasn't offered one, or maybe he doesn't like Drury or his tactics

Would like to know where you worked in Gainsborough, distinct lack of industry, and people who work here hang on to their jobs, and the playoffs were the talk of the town. The queues for tickets v Nuneaton snaked through the town, and were a sell out. Think that bit of your post will be taken with a pinch of salt

We are Trinity's feeder club, the same way Arsenal are Man City's. Money talks...

The money stops at the end of the season at Trinity.
IF and its a bit IF they did get promotion - they would come crashing right down again.  They would be the whipping boys of the Conference.  In all their history the crowds have been poor - and for a team pushing for the play offs for the second season running - their crowds are still poor.  No doubt when we play them on 2 Feb, 40-50% of the crowd will no doubt be from Boston.

Although Trinity are in the play offs - their Cup run, and now the bad weather may cause them problems towards the end of the season when they play catch up.   They aren't the only club who may have similar problems.   Boston are only 1 point from the play offs but have played more games than other teams, although doubtful it could happen that we do get into the play offs, and match against Trinity to get into the final would be one to look forward to.

If, and its a big if, we get promotion we will do our best, under a great young local manager to compete at Conference level ( like Hyde)
Our crowds, compared to population compares favourably with anyone, and Boston do bring a good crowd here, but I doubt if more than 200 make the trip this year

Trinity v Boston play off final would be brilliant, for both teams and lincs football in general, but I don't think you will do it his year ( not under hoof it Drury!)
