The B-Ark / Re: v Buxton - Match Thread

Another enjoyable away trip, made better by a late winner. Just as we'd missed our usual glut of chances it looked like only a point would be our prize but the team kept going and was rewarded. Newsham missed a great chance in the first half, Danny had two fantastic chances wasted and Churchy was unmarked with a free header from a corner but got underneath it and headed over. I think we deserved a win last night as we created the better chances. Having said that it took a couple of outstanding saves from our keeper to collect the win. Dare I say it but we had a bit of rub of the green last night, which hasn't seemed to happened much recently. Prior to the first save Evans made the ball was handled by one of our defenders though the ball fell to their forward and it looked certain goal until Evans somehow scooped it out.(I was waiting for the ref to point to the spot but he didn't) Also on our goal, the initial shot(Cotton's I think) was easily covered by their keeper but took a late deflection causing the ball to pinball between the keeper and defender and fall perfectly for Suarez who was running in to bundle home. Still we got the deserved points which rewarded all those who'd gone up to Durham.(This description of the goal is for the benefit of Woad Pilgrim who was fiddling with his phone at the time! )

and yes I do expect to be entertained.

I stopped kidding myself years ago that I go to watch Boston United for entertainment. Blyth Spartan 5-4 wins and dicking Luton Town 4-3 come round as often as Haleys Comet. Fact is we have been set up not to lose and that's what's happened, we haven't lost like we would have last season. Like our managers I would be lot happier if we were winning our home games but it's not happened. Against Kendal and Whitby our forwards have missed six easy scoring chances they should have put in the net blindfolded. The three away games I've seen we've looked a lot more relaxed when teams have to come at us. If you want entertainment I'll try and get scary Mary to do a half time strip, though you definitely won't set foot in York Street again after such a traumatic sight.

The B-Ark / Re: Paul Shirtliff 1962-2009
« on: September 15, 2009, 12:29:47 AM »

This is absolutely tragic news.

Some time around the early 1990s Boston United ran a feature in the matchday programme where supporters were invited to pick their best all time "Boston United XI." I had no hesitation whatsoever in naming Paul Shirtliff as the best right back who had played for the club during my time as a supporter, and I maintain that opinion to this day. Yes, we did make it to the Football League, and yes we've had some really good players pulling on a Boston shirt, but in my opinion and as a supporter for almost 30 years, we have not seen Shirtliff's equal as far as right backs are concerned.

If life were in any way fair, then we ought to be inviting Paul Shirtliff back to the club as a legend. He's a lot more deserving of that title than some of the faces we've paraded around the pitch at half-time. It's really sad that this won't now happen. But I really hope that the club will allow for a minute's silence as a mark of respect at the next home game.

Condolences to Paul's family.
Absolutely, came from the amazing Frickley side of the mid eighties, never has a better right back played for the club since. He was quality and his class shone through. Been taken from this earth far too soon, gone but certainly not forgotten, a true legend.

Absolutely gutted to leave tonight with just a point, as I don't think BPA will play worse at home all season. Second half hit the bar, missed too many chances and their keeper even saved a shot with his legs. When you only have a one goal lead it's never enough, though if tonight had been a boxing match the ref would have ended it. Unfortunately we need to learn to be more clinical and finish teams off as they were the ones who delivered a knockout punch at the end. Still there were some great performances from us tonight, Suarez and Newsham were superb and special mention to Nick Jackson and Cully. BPA shocked me as they seem to have too many players collecting a decent wage and playing as if they are a bunch of strangers, a bit like us last season. Lee Sinnott won't keep his job if they keep playing like that, they got out of jail big time tonight. Let's hope we take our frustrations out on Whitby on Saturday. Ref was the best I have seen this season (not saying much). Catering: The homemade chips were great though the Meat and Potato was a big let down,as it didn't seem to contain the aforementioned meat and potato. I also suspect the pie crust had been used on the nose cone of the space shuttle as it re-entered the earth's atmosphere, such was it's tough, robust texture. Still not a bad sign when you come away from BPA gutted with a point. Utter robbery on their part, I shall be calling Crimewatch shortly.

Dave H,I think it was the same steward! The one who holds his back all the time and long hair!I was sat with a big club sponsor who commented thats why people dont come to matches ;)
You've seen him in action too! One time he was yelling at a middle age woman sat on her own who I suspect was a parent of one of the players! Just not needed. I think his application to Hitler Youth was turned down as a child and he's been making up for this disappointment ever since.

Same steward told the young supporters to sit down to celebrate!About time they realise we are in the non league now! What qualifications do you need to be a steward?
Nearly as bad as the steward who has started telling the people sat behind York Street to "Take your feet off the seats". I've seen two people busted in a foot police raid. He would have a better arguement if someone cleaned the pigeon crap off some of the seats.

were was the frickley fans then hardly saw any
Seeing as their last home gate was 159 it gives you an idea of how many Pilgrims were there last night!

Fantastic team performance last night with many excellent performances, though a special mention should go to Jamie Clarke for the way he battled away, and his cross to set up the goal was outstanding. We created plenty of scoring chances and should have had two or three by half time. First Half Tom Evans could have sat in goal with a deckchair and pipe. Second half Frickley came out and gave it a go, but still didn't create much in the way of clear goal scoring opportunites. Credit must go to our defence who looked incredibly solid (Two consecutive clean sheets speaks for itself) and again we created more great scoring chances. Suarez had a good game when he came on and as did Dan Cotton who looks a great prospect. He loves running at people and taking defenders on, an old school winger. Just what you need when defending a 1-0 lead, so I thought the substitutions worked. All in all a great performance and well deserved three points, we played alot of decent football and you get the feeling there's more to come. Considering the Unibond have given us 4/6 away opening fixtures, 100% away record isn't a bad start!
Also the Farmer Dan/People on day release from Rauceby types that frequent the Spayne Road stand, weren't berating our young players from start to finish like on Saturday, which is an enjoyable part of away matches. Funny how these people are never seen at other grounds?  My theory is they don't like to get out of the county cos "It's full of strangers..." ("This is a local shop for local people"....)
Last ten minutes were nerve wracking due purely to the one goal cushion and the officials finding five minutes of injury time from somewhere. We are Boston United, we don't do things easily. Oh yes, Frickley's bar must have trebled their takings last night thanks to us lot.

Looks like we pipped Nuneaton for him:
By MATT DAVIES
NUNEATON Town have missed out on the signing of Spanish striker Mikel Suarez after he turned down a move to Liberty Way.

Boro boss Kevin Wilkin offered terms to the target man following an impressive trial spell, but he has chosen to sign for UniBond League side Boston United.

Wilkin said: "I’m disappointed. I wanted to bring him to the club and made him what I thought was a decent offer, it was a good offer.

"He will be in a school of four that will travel to Boston and he would have been travelling on his own to us three times a week. That counted against us.

"I told him at an early stage we wanted him to stay at the club and we did our best to keep him. Boston are a big side with a decent budget.

"They’ve got money to pay out so I’m sure that is what they will do."

Wilkin had hoped Suarez would feature in Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat to AFC Telford United. Lee Moore gave Nuneaton a 68th minute lead before Telford hit back.

Despite the defeat, the Boro boss was pleased with what he saw from his side.

The B-Ark / Re: Keeper

32yr old Tom Evans signed today.....
I remember him being a great keeper from our Football League days, a great signing. I don't think he will be on the bench all season. Still, a great player for Aaron to learn from, and competition will be provided now. Still, for his age, Aaron is a tremendous keeper and will surely go onto a higher level one day.

The B-Ark / Re: sven goran eriksson poised to manage notts county!
« on: July 21, 2009, 06:10:32 PM »
Not manager but 'director of football', if he gets stuck he can call Crazzee Jimmy for advice.
What is it with Notts County and Ex-England managers? Howard Wilkinson was there not so long ago, and Glenn Hoddle was the name linked with Sven for the current post. From Man City to Notts County via Mexico in less than a year. Easier to predict the winning Euromillions number than that combination, where next? At this rate even Grantham Town can't be ruled out.

A couple of times last season i found that the download stopped part way through, give it a few minutes and then tried again and it worked.

Sometimes streaming it (just clicking on the link) causes problems rather than downloading (right click save as etc.)
Cheers for that, they had stopped working on my computer, though this has got them going again!

With the posh title and the refurb I shall be expecting waitress service. ;D
Don't worry after the decisions for Farsely and Northwich in comparison to us I shall always refer to it as "The Suite FA Lounge" in honour of how many decisions will go our way if the Conference/FA have any input. See you before game tonight?

Dave mate,I've worked out who you are from the clues!! ,Nottingham,The Eagle, the real ale-now you just have to work out who your talking too!.
Here's a couple of (big) clues-I don't live to far from your mum and we sit even closer at York Street!
Sorry mate, my Sherlock Holmes deductive reasoning hasn't been too sharp of late, seeing as I spent many games sat by you I should have realised! I knew you liked your Talisker but didn't know you were into real ale! Hopefully the new bar will have a better selection.
