The B-Ark / Re: Midweek games on Tuesdays
« on: June 24, 2009, 04:03:52 PM »
Until 1959 it was Thursday afternoons (early closing day for shops) in Boston, although it was sometimes switched to suit the away team's travelling arrangements. With the advent of floodlights, most teams chose Wednesdays for various reasons, such as an Armed Forces base near the ground - they usually get Wednesday afternoons off for sport and could travel early, or a mid-week market in the town which brought in the country folk. The slow change towards Tuesday happened over a period of time but the majority of clubs had switched by the early nineties. A possible reason was to avoid internationals on the box which affected the local gate. Now, less than one club in ten sticks to Wednesday.

The B-Ark / Re: what would you give if you had been the ref
« on: June 24, 2009, 03:48:08 PM »
I saw something similar at Carrow Road in the eighties. Rob Newman hung around the keeper, who dropped the ball against Newman and he tapped it into the net. The ref gave a free kick to the keeper and booked Newman. I have never been able to find that in the rule book, unless it's ungentlemanly conduct for wanting to score.

Let's be very careful here. There's probably a rule that states that reading and trying to understand the rules is an offence worthy of demotion if your club's name begins with a B, contains at least two Os, and ends in United.

Does it matter? The only chant I want to hear is YES!!! as the ball hits the back of the net, preferably at regular intervals.

Football League fixtures published this morning, so just the Conference to come before the way is clear for ours.

Good luck to you all at D&R, and especially Life-long Dagger who used to post with intelligence on our board in the past. If anyone knows him, please pass on the good wishes.

Weymouth appears to be slipping deeper into the doodoo by the day. At this rate, we could be back into the Football League by August.

If she signs I'll buy a season ticket, and try to get a pass for the team bath.
