Until 1959 it was Thursday afternoons (early closing day for shops) in Boston, although it was sometimes switched to suit the away team's travelling arrangements. With the advent of floodlights, most teams chose Wednesdays for various reasons, such as an Armed Forces base near the ground - they usually get Wednesday afternoons off for sport and could travel early, or a mid-week market in the town which brought in the country folk. The slow change towards Tuesday happened over a period of time but the majority of clubs had switched by the early nineties. A possible reason was to avoid internationals on the box which affected the local gate. Now, less than one club in ten sticks to Wednesday.
