The B-Ark / Sunday Times Competition - Where Was I?
« on: August 23, 2009, 09:23:57 AM »
Anyone from Boston like me who likes spending a few minutes solving the Sunday Times "Where Was I?" competition on a Sunday morning may find this week's competition a bit easier than usual.  8)

You could win a long weekend for two at the Turnberry Resort, in Scotland if you can solve the two cryptic clues!

The B-Ark / Prediction League - Frickley Athletic vs Boston United
« on: August 23, 2009, 08:38:56 AM »
Frickley won their first game of the season against Burscough, but have since lost to Ocid and Whitby, so I'm going for a narrow Boston win (especially as I won't be there to see it as I'm visiting the Bristol office on Tuesday!):

Frickley Athletic 0-1 Boston United (246)

and here's one sent in by Loo earlier:

Frickley Ath 1  BUFC 2   Atten 322

The B-Ark / Prediction League - Boston United vs Kendal Town
« on: August 17, 2009, 11:35:35 PM »
Kendal have played their midweek game (another win) and Boston don't have one so it's time to start this up. So I'm going for:

Boston United 1-0 Kendal Town (1350)

The B-Ark / Prediction League - FC United of Manchester vs Boston United
« on: August 08, 2009, 07:56:58 AM »
The new season is just a week away so it's time to start up the impsTALK Pilgrims' Patter Prediction League again.

For those who haven't played in previous seasons, it's all about predicting the results and attendances of Boston United's games throughout the season.

All predictions must be made before kick off.

You get 3 points for the correct score or 1 point for the correct result.

You get 10 points if you get the attendance spot on or 3 points if within 25 or 1 point if within 50.

Soon after each game I usually manage to process the scores and update the points table and post it on Patter.

As the season goes on you accumulate points and the winner is the person with the most points at the end of the season. There's no prizes apart from the honour of being the winner. It's just a bit of fun!

So to kick things off here's my prediction for the opening match:

FC United of Manchester 0-1 Boston United (2825)

Post your own predictions as replys.

The B-Ark / Unibond Premier grounds on Google Earth
« on: July 11, 2009, 08:51:39 PM »
I've just had a go at putting all the 09/10 Unibond Premier grounds, addresses & telephone numbers in a kmz file, so if you've got Google Earth installed on your computer then point your browser at:

http://www.bufc.drfox.org.uk/UnibondPremier0910.kmz

and you should be able to see what all the grounds look like (apart from Nantwich Town which is just a field as the Google Earth photos aren't quite up-to-date!).

The B-Ark / Farsley Celtic
« on: July 06, 2009, 09:05:15 AM »
I see Farsley Celtic have been kicked out the Conference after going into administration.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_conf/8132775.stm

They now have nowhere to play. But the Unibond Premier is a team short after the Newcastle Blue Star fiasco and the fixtures aren't out yet, so wouldn't it be sensible to just let Farsley fill the gap in the Unibond Premier? Or is that just too sensible?  :o

It would be nice for me - another very easy trip from Leeds!

The B-Ark / Midweek games on Tuesdays
« on: June 24, 2009, 12:17:01 PM »
I see that Boston United will now be playing their home midweek games on Tuesday nights instead of Wednesdays.

http://www.bufc.co.uk/article/2704265/Day-change-for-midweek-clashes

It looks like it makes sense from a logistical point of view now that the club is part-time.

Wasn't Wednesday originally chosen because Tuesday night was bingo night at the Gliderdrome? Is bingo still going on there? If it is, perhaps the change is also a dig at the Malkinsons for their outrageous rent claims on York Street!

The B-Ark / Newcastle Blue Star
« on: June 19, 2009, 12:22:05 PM »
Has anyone heard anything lately about whether Newcastle Blue Star are still going?

The FA allocations put them in the Unibond Premier with us and according to our O/S they are one of the teams that are being officially welcomed into the Premier Division at the Unibond League AGM in Blackpool on Saturday.

But there's been nothing on their web site since 16th May when they said if they didn't find someone to pump in large sums of money then the club would cease to exist.

So are we going to be a team short next season, or have they sorted things out?

The B-Ark / Top Gear Challenge
« on: June 13, 2009, 10:19:30 PM »
You may remember that on the way to the Cammel Laird game at the end of the season I came across the Tornado steam engine at Grantham station, so I took a few snaps and put them on the Impstalk forum.

http://www.impstalk.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=4442.0

Well I heard it was a Top Gear challenge and when I did a bit of googling on the Monday morning I found a pic of Jeremy Clarkson arriving in Edinburgh covered in soot in the fireman's outfit and then I twigged that it was him in one of my photos at Grantham!

The new season of Top Gear starts next Sunday, so I'll be looking out for the challenge. The Radio Times for next week's show says:

Sunday 21 June
8:00pm - 9:00pm
BBC2

"Motoring news and views. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May compete in an epic London-to-Edinburgh race, setting out to discover what Top Gear might have been like 60 years ago. James grabs a gorgeous old Jaguar XK120 sports car, while Richard chooses to torture himself on the Vincent Black Shadow motorbike, and Jeremy takes the Tornado, a new steam train built to the blueprints used to create some of Britain's finest locomotives in the heyday of the railways."

The rumour on the web was that May won it in the Jag!

The B-Ark / Leeds "Run for All" - Sunday 21st June
« on: May 31, 2009, 12:15:36 PM »
Time to run away and hide - I'm after your money again.

And this time I can annoy you even more by making it a sticky topic!  ;D

But it's a very good cause and all donations will be very, very gratefully received.

In December 2007 Terry Pratchett, one of my favourite authors, was diagnosed with a rare early-onset form of Alzheimer's. So last year I entered Jane Tomlinson's Run for All to try and raise some money for helping towards funding some research to help people like Terry from losing their thinking skills.

Well as I'm sure you all remember, I did the run - I finished in 932nd place (out of 11,000) - not too bad for someone who was just about to hit 50. My friends and family were very generous and donated £850 to the cause. So this year I'm hoping to do it all again. The 10km run takes place in Leeds on Sunday 21st June and I've started training again and I plan to run it my Boston United replica kit again.

So I'll be pestering you all to make donations over the next three weeks. You can sponsor me by visiting my fundraising page at:

http://www.justgiving.com/kafox

You may have seen the two-part documentary about Terry on the BBC earlier this year. It looks like they are really close to coming up with effective treatments so a bit more money could do an awful lot of good. He is still writing and his next Discworld book is due out in October and it's about football at the Unseen University so it should be fun. It's called Unseen Academicals.

So it's not long now until I help bugger up the traffic in Leeds for a few hours. I've been sent my chip and allocated number 1483, so you might even be able to track me on the way round.

Despite putting in about 900 km of training runs since last year I don't seem to be getting any quicker. I must be getting old. Well I am getting old. Anyway it would be nice to run it a few minutes faster than last year so that I finish in less minutes than I am years old.  8)

The B-Ark / National League Allocations?
« on: May 29, 2009, 10:42:13 AM »
Well the FA are supposed to be announcing the allocations to steps 1-4 this morning.

http://www.thefa.com/Leagues/NationalLeagueSystem/NewsAndFeatures/2009/cluballocations280509.aspx

So has anyone heard anything yet?

Perhaps they are sharing an alarm clock with impsTALK and have overslept.  ;D

or something else?
