The B-Ark / Prediction League - Boston United vs Leamington in the Emirates FA Cup

Back in 1977/8 Boston United had one of their best ever squads. They would win the Northern Premier League well ahead of Wigan Athletic as well as defeating Southern League Wimbledon in the Champion of Champions Cup. However in the FA Cup they entered in the 4th Qualifying Round with a game at home against AP Leamington and went out after a 2-1 defeat.

Leamington are a different club to AP Leamington, but it would be nice if this year Boston could avoid another early FA Cup defeat as in 1977. Last season Leamington were in the National League North with Boston but they got relegated. Boston United beat them home and away. So I'm predicting:

Boston United 2-0 Leamington (1250)

My Computer says A Draw and as both sides drew 0-0 on Tuesday evening I'll go with that, but with a few more goals:

Darlington have only won one game so far this season - away at Alfreton. So not surprisingly My Computer is predicting an easy Away Win. I'm not quite so confident, so I'm going for a narrow Away Win.

Like Boston United, Bishop's Stortford started the season with a win and a draw, but Bishop's Stortford then lost their next three games 0-1. So not surprisingly My Computer is predicting an Away Win. I'll go with that, so:

P.S. The last time Boston went to Bisphop's Stortford for a game was back in 2012 on August Bank Holiday Monday. Bishop's Stortford won 1-0 in front of 559.

Yet another new team provide the opposition. Newly promoted Warrington Town have started well with three wins out of four games. My Computer is predicting a Draw. I'll go with that so:

Southport have lost all three games so far and Boston have had a draw, a win and a loss. My Computer is predicting an easy away win. We've had a few great wins at Southport over the years, so let's hope for another one. I'm going for:

Another promoted team - this time Tamworth who were champions of the Southern League Premier Central. They knocked Boston United out of the FA Trophy last season - winning on penalties after it ended 1-1. So another tough one that's difficult to predict. My Computer reckons a narrow Home Win, but I'm not quite so sure so I'm going for:

An interesting first home fixture this season. South Shields were promoted from the Northern Premier League after finishing top with 85 points - 8 points clear of runners up Warrington Town. They've started with a convincing 3-1 win against Alfreton Town. So it's going to be a tough one.

I'm going for:

Boston United 2-2 South Shields (1650)

P.S. The last time Boston United played South Shields at home in a league game was on Wednesday 22nd August 1973. Boston won 4-1 in front of 1850 - including me. Boston goals were by Howard Wilkinson, Alan Tewley,, Jim Conde and an o.g. Boston went on to win the Northern Premier League ahead of Wigan Athletic and Altrincham.

The B-Ark / Prediction League - Buxton vs Boston United

The season starts again in a fortnight so it's time to start up the Prediction League for 2023/4.

For those who haven't played before, it has been all about predicting the results and attendances of Boston United's competitive first team games throughout the season. As the season goes on you accumulate points and the winner is the person with the most points at the end of the season.

There's no entry fee as it's just a bit of fun.

However, Oxo (Mel) is once again generously awarding a memento to the season's winner.

All predictions must be made before kick off - although I'm open to bribes of a pint of Batemans XXXB or Dark Lord to accept predictions that are a few minutes late. 

You get 3 points for the correct score or 1 point for the correct result.

For attendance predictions it is 10 points if you get the attendance spot on or 3 points if within 5% or 1 point if within 10%.

Soon after each game I usually managed to process the scores and update the points table and post it on Patter.

You are allowed to edit your prediction right up until kickoff time.

In Cup games with extra time or penalties it's the score at the end of normal time that counts.

If a game is postponed or abandoned then all predictions for that match are null and void.

Just post your predictions in the thread on here for each match.

Here's my prediction for the first game:

Buxton 1-2 Boston United (1111)

There's not much to base it on. With the wholesale team changes over the summer, last season's form isn't going to help much. However here's how the season ended for Buxton and Boston.

With end-of-season matches where for both sides there's nothing left to play for you sometimes get a crazy result. My Computer is suggesting an easy Home Win. I'm going for:

My Computer has this down as A Draw, which is probably about right, but with Curzon Aston pushing for a playoff place and Boston currently needing a point to make sure they aren't relegated, anything could happen. I'm going with My Computer and:

The top two in-form sides in the National League North face one another and there's the added factor of Buxton's former Boston United manager Craig Elliott who has turned Buxton's fortunes around since joining them in December. My Computer reckons it's going to be a Draw. I'll go with that so:
