That seems a bit strong Pete, they have picked points up against higher placed teams than us (not many I grant you).

The problems this year lie in recruitment (and retention) but it is unlikely to just be budget although likely linked as I don’t think the hybrid system allows us to attract the required players at this level when there are so many full time sides and our location compared to others is also a significant stumbling block(especially if we can’t offer more money to compensate that).

A tough January to right that wrong (if possible) but not overspend so that we are ruined for the next 5-10 years

I’ve responded to a post on the Facebook group by saying this and it applies here as well (please feel free to correct maths if it is incorrect though)

We will need 1.4 points per game to get to 50 (team in 20th is likely to get to that as their current ppg is only a couple of points short of that).

If we were to have got 1.4 ppg last year for the season in National League we would have got 64 points and been 9th.

Can we go from the 23rd best team to the 9th best immediately and for the whole of the rest of the season because unless we do we will be down? (I don’t think we can and unless the chairman thought we could then there’s no point throwing money at this year and to save it for a good crack at bouncing back in a tough league next year, particularly if Macclesfield come up)

It’s the 2 week break that has done it. Had we beaten Gainsborough and been in the cup this weekend then think he would still be here, not only from the lack of gap but the result may have had a knock on effect of confidence to get something from the 2 home games that followed.

I think he was looking tired and running low on ideas to try to make it work. If he had been given time then I would have been behind that as he had credit from last year but fully understand the reason for the change now. If we didn’t change now then any change would have been too late and we may as well have started preparing by for NLN football at Cmas. But the chairman has shown ambition by wanting to make a change to give us a chance to stay up and we need to support whoever is next in the hot seat

Not surprised and we could see this coming from the summer recruitment, the finishing position last year and the history of promoted teams.

The fact that the chairman has said in programme notes means that there was budget to spend and we didn’t spend it and that budget must have been 1 of the lowest in the league. Why wasn’t it spent? Did we try to do things on the cheap or could we not get the players in (location, salary, hybrid rather than full time or part time?). If we couldn’t get the players in then I doubt we are in a better position now to attract the required quality to even fight to stay up.

We are now 6 adrift, on a ppg we won’t get to 30 points let alone 50, not won at home this season (I’ll ignore the 200 days as that includes nearly half of that time not playing a competitive game at home) and have nothing on the horizon to suggest things will improve as this squad looks at best mid table in the league below!

I started the season with a 5th from bottom is an achievement to aim for and enjoy the season. However now we are in it and getting turned over every week, it’s not enjoyable even with low expectations

The B-Ark / Re: Barnet
« on: October 11, 2024, 12:35:16 PM »
Having just got back from holiday that I took immediately after the Barnet game (pre-booked so not as a reaction to the game) I agree with everything above.

Barnet were a good footballing side who controlled the whole game but in particular the second half. Was this wind assisted as it was quite breezy coming out of the ground and could have assisted the teams attacking our end? However the way they moved it to their wings with supporting full backs caused us problems throughout and no surprise that this is where the goals came from.

As for us, the team gave 100% effort throughout and never threw in the towel. Whilst that is the minimum we would expect as fans, it should still be acknowledged. Also going to the league leaders and losing is no surprise and probably I’m more concerned with the way Maidenhead turned us over at home the week before!

We are clearly missing the quality and type of player needed to compete in this league. This isn’t a surprise to any of us though. We also have a midfield of 3 workhorses and battlers but no one who can create - as seen by our lack of opportunities even on a counter attack in this game.

Agree that the key recruitment would be left back, centre back, centre midfield, and a centre forward. However getting those players in who would be available and good enough to keep us up will be difficult now. However without some better players in, we could be cut adrift (possibly with Wealdstone and Ebbsfleet) by December and face a long winter
