The B-Ark / Boxing Day in Lowestoft
« on: May 14, 2015, 05:52:38 PM »
I see the league have placed Oxford in Conference South next year and have kept Lowestoft in the north. I assume we're still Lowestoft's nearest rivals and therefore they'll be our Boxing Day and New Years day opponents?

Personally I'd have moved Lowestoft rather than Oxford. Whilst both are relatively close to the nucleus of London clubs, Oxford is much more accessible to/from the north because of the motorway network.

The B-Ark / M62 lorry crash

Anyone on their way to Chorley ought to be aware of this and perhaps consider a different route ...

The B-Ark / Conor Marshall joins King's Lynn

It's a pity. Played well for us in a number of different positions (full-back, centre-back, midfield) and in my opinion he would have been worth holding onto because of his versatility. Unlucky with injuries this season, but would definitely have played more if he'd been fully fit. Does this free up some cash for an extra signing ourselves?

The B-Ark / Nathan Abbey set to return to York Street?

He's currently the goalkeeper for St Neots, and will be back at York Street in the FA Cup if they can overcome Dereham in the replay.

The B-Ark / Colwyn Bay versus Llandudno - Match Postponed
« on: February 11, 2014, 05:21:49 PM »

Tonight's fixture between Colwyn Bay and Llandudno in a Welsh cup competition has been postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. Has anyone got any contacts in that area to know how bad things are? Are things likely to improve ahead of our visit on Saturday?

The B-Ark / 1992: From the archives
« on: February 05, 2014, 11:38:39 AM »
Found this amongst a pile of old football magazines from 1992 - look who scored two goals against us and picked up the man of the match! There's some good names to remember there though amongst both sides. The likes of McKenna, Shirtliff, Hardy and Swailes gave us one of the best defences we've had down the years, so this Greene character must have been a decent enough player to score twice against them. Mark West was a decent striker as well, but it looks like Greene was keeping him out of the side.

The same pile of magazines also unearthed an article about Newcastle United's teenage starlet being invited to a training session with the full England squad. His name was Chris Holland. I knew he'd been a good player before he'd joined us, but hadn't realised he'd gone quite so high. Very interesting to look back.

The B-Ark / Goole v Coalville: Player attacks fan
« on: January 25, 2014, 09:53:00 PM »

Goole's captain was sent off in a 3-0 defeat today. On his way off the pitch he ran onto the terracing where he threw a punch at a supporter who was having a go at him. The incident was filmed on someone's phone and has been added to YouTube (warning: contains strong language).

I know it's not in the top flight, but I think this is worse than Cantona v Crystal Palace. It'll be interesting to see what the footballing authorities do about this.

The B-Ark / FA Youth Cup: Holwell Sports 0 Boston United 4
« on: September 25, 2013, 10:13:23 PM »
United were the best side from start to finish and the scoreline was a fair reflection. We had four different goalscorers, and the Holwell keeper was easily the busiest on the night.

Main talking point was United's second "goal", which was a long range free kick which clattered the underside of the crossbar and bounced down. I was probably the best placed in the ground to see it, and the ball was still in play by at least a foot. But Hawkeye hasn't yet reached Holwell and the linesman awarded us a goal! It was a decision that can only be described as embarassing, but it was unusual to get one of those decisions in our favour.

Holwell's goalkeeper was booked for dissent in the aftermath, but you had to feel sorry for him in the circumstances. That said, he was probably lucky not to get sent off for the way he continued having a go at the officials even after the ref had shown him the yellow card.

Good entertaining game. One downside came from a bedroom window of one of the terraced houses on a neighbouring street, from where someone kept shining a laser pen across the pitch throughout the second half! It's amazing how annoying that can become and how much of a distraction it is when you're trying to watch a game. Hopefully somebody from Holwell will knock on the door of the address concerned and teach the idiot a lesson.

Onwards and upwards. All we need now is for the first team to negotiate an away cup tie!

The B-Ark / Guiseley sack their manager
« on: September 11, 2013, 09:10:35 PM »
From their official site...

Quote
In light of recent performances, Guiseley AFC have decided to part company with long-serving manager Steve Kittrick.

Steve has brought a great deal of success in the past six years, guiding the club to the UniBond Challenge Cup and promotion to the Conference North before finishing in the play-off positions in each of the last three seasons.

However, in the light of a disappointing end to last season and a difficult start to the current campaign, the club feels it has no choice but to move on.

Mark Bower will step in as caretaker manager with immediate effect alongside assistant manager Chris Holland and therapist Martin Stringfellow.

Mark will take charge of his first game away at Boston United on Saturday.

Based on the size of the club I think Guiseley are punching above their weight in even being in Blue Square Skrill North. After three successive play-off finishes surely he deserved a bit more time? So what if they're not top of the table after six games? Things could have been worse. They could have been Gainsborough.

It'll be interesting to see how the Guiseley players react against Boston on Saturday. Hopefully they'll put in the same kind of display as we did at Vauxhall Motors last season - immediately after we'd sacked Jason Lee.

I haven't looked up who Mark Bower is but, given that Chris Holland was the assistant manager, I wonder why he hasn't taken caretaker charge?

The B-Ark / Indy Aujla
« on: July 26, 2013, 09:20:56 AM »

Aujla played for us last night in the pre-season friendly at Grantham, presumably another triallist. He's currently still listed on Frickley Athletic's website as one of their players, but has travelled a lot - including overseas. He's played for the same club in Belgium as Jason Stokes and has had trials with Leeds United. There weren't that many Boston fans there last night so probably won't get much of a debate going on here, but I thought Aujla showed more than Billy Bennett and might be worth another look.

Couple of articles about him here:

As an aside, also noticed from Frickley's website that there was a familiar name playing for them in their last pre-season friendly ... Korey Dyer-Stewart!

The B-Ark / Rory Coleman
« on: July 20, 2013, 10:02:56 PM »

Rory Coleman, who played for Boston United on loan from Scunthorpe United, is currently the champion of Countdown! For anyone interested, here is a link to the 4-on-Demand catchup page...

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/countdown/4od

He'll be appearing again on Monday. Maybe he'll get his chance to make an 8-letter word out of the following letters: H N D A B L A L

I'm not sure if he's still registered as a Gainsborough Trinity player. If he is, then maybe Trinity should add the Countdown teapot to their list of honours?

The B-Ark / Fixture Lists
« on: July 02, 2013, 06:54:03 AM »

Just 24 hours to go and then we can start making plans for the mid-winter trips to Barrow and Workington and the Tuesday night in Stalybridge!

I make the same point every year and I don't suppose this year is going to be any different, but there ought to be a way of concentrating the longest trips for each club towards the beginning and end of each season (easier travel conditions and less chance of weather related postponement), and keeping midweek dates for the more local fixtures. This is part-time football after all, and players as well as fans have jobs to contend with. But I'm still expecting there'll be some awkward entries on tomorrow's list.

The B-Ark / 28 years ago today
« on: May 11, 2013, 07:24:00 AM »
Bit of nostalgia...

Boston United were at Wembley in the FA Trophy Final. Tragically the Bradford fire was on the same day.

Time to reminisce? Great goal by Cookie and good penalty save by Kevin Blackwell. Good performance in the second half, though we didn't really do ourselves justice in the first half. Wealdstone's first goal came from a corner that should have been a goal kick (still annoying, even after 28 years).

If you believe the latest list of transfers from the EvoStik League website, then Korey Dyer-Stewart has joined Rainworth Miners Welfare. It doesn't say its a loan deal either.

http://evostikleague.pitchero.com/saturdays-transfer-list-11633/

Has this been reported anywhere else?

Other transfers of interest are Matt Thornhill, the ex-Forest midfielder who played for our reserves the other week, signing for Buxton. And Franny Green has gone to Hucknall.

Dorchester are about to play Plymouth Argyle live on ESPN. For anyone interested, ex-Pilgrim Ashley Nicholls is in the Dorchester team.
