Mel, I can't agree with you about Abbott. I thought he covered most blades of grass this evening, won the ball frequently, tried to get things going, and has been one of our most improved players in recent weeks (like you, I've had my doubts in the past). I'm not sure who else deserved it.
However, that does not excuse the witless football we saw this evening. I cannot understand why we continued all game to hoof it forward when it was obvious after a few minutes (as it is in most games) that this simply does not work. Most defences at this level will lap up that approach, as Curzon indeed did all night. The forwards rarely dropped back to try and get the ball in space (which only encourages the hoof, of course), and when Knowles did a few times towards the end of the first half he was ignored. There didn't seem to be any move by team or management to change the style. We have players who like the ball at their feet this year, so why on earth do we not play to their strengths? I wish the team would be coached to look for and find space as there is a serious lack of movement most of the time. I was too far away to judge either penalty appeal, but we shouldn't have to rely on such things. Credit to Curzon, as they came with a plan and stuck to it. I'm afraid that quite often I don't know what ours is.
We didn't deserve to win this evening, even though it is the sort of game we ought to win if we have play-off hopes. However, UTP!

Jake Wright is lucky not to be leaving with a 3 match suspension after his off the ball assault on their keeper. He's a liability at times and reacts badly much like Middleton did last season when he was getting slated. Lucky not to be sent of as the linesman saw it and the referee consulted him. If he had been sent off it could have cost us.
Much as I like his wholehearted approach, he's never far from a booking or worse. Some of us on the Spayne Road side reckon when he's playing that they ought to ditch the Golden Goal competition and go for the minute he gets booked instead.
