The B-Ark / Streaming
« on: January 26, 2024, 05:03:36 PM »
Comprehensive streaming of all NLN fixtures to cease as of February, with games instead being selected on a per-round basis.

I would hope we'd end up being regularly picked as one of the better supported teams in the division, but there are no guarantees I guess!

Tough watch but an excellent point. Mooney won't want to watch his miss back but I suspect he'll be made to!

Unfortunately most of the teams above us (apart from Chorley) all won, so the gap to the play-offs is now creeping ever wider.

Kudos to anyone who went tonight, conditions looked terrible and games on plastic are seemingly never fun to watch.

No complaints about that. Very sloppy and disjointed from us this evening - the conditions didn't help and we all know how rank we are on plastic (despite training on it!) but as the old saying goes, it's the same for both teams and we simply weren't at it tonight. Huge gaps down their right channel - LB continues to be a source of frustration - and the defending was back to its early season worst.

And why is Sotona arguing yet again on the field with his teammates about who gets to take the penalties? Sort it out in training lads - it's really unprofessional.

Scotty (Pilgrim86) has made the useful point on Facebook that this game is in fact available for streaming, despite it being a Saturday 3pm k.o.

Warm welcome to our newest director - Richard Maxwell, who you may know from his ARM sponsorship and for winning a few bob on the lottery a few years back.

David Newton has been quick to rule out Mr Maxwell pumping substantial funds into the club - and rightly so!

Thought that was a very solid win. Bit of a nothing first half but we stepped it up a gear in the second with two really excellent goals and a decent team effort overall, especially considering we had three players probably carrying knocks from Saturday and some enforced changes (Mills is always going to be a big miss). I'm not going to sit here and pretend Sports were all that good but we've already seen United slip up against limited teams, especially away, several times this season so this was a step in the right direction!

The B-Ark / Autumn stock take

Cully sounds increasingly fed up in his post-match interviews, and as much as I enjoy and appreciate the BBC’s commentary I think some of the questions can sometimes come across as a bit ‘soft’ - more like statements than anything else:

“A chance to put things right next Saturday” – yes that’s how fixture lists tend to work!
“Another good turnout by Boston fans” – always is.
“Does this defeat hurt?” – Cully’s not exactly going to say no, is he?

So what more difficult questions could be asked of the management about this ongoing run of poor away form that might get to the bottom of the inconsistency that seems to plague this bloody club every season? It seems to me we’ve swapped out one set of problems for a whole new set this season – where would I start?

- Can we afford to do hybrid justice? Sure we see the players more in training, but it seems to have come at the cost of squad depth, which is obviously lacking.

- Have we maxed out the budget? What wriggle room is there to address our obvious deficiencies? Surely some injuries have to be anticipated – we can’t just moan about a small squad, because that’s a strategic decision, not something forced on us.

- Is recruitment actually now harder because players can’t commit to the extra training?

- Without giving too much away, what is the ‘blueprint’ the club alludes to? Is it anchored to Cully himself? If he left, would it have to change or would a new manager be expected to fit around it and the existing squad?

- The u23s have done well replacing the missing, but is “done well” good enough for a club looking for promotion? Are these players better coming off the bench as part of their development rather than being relied on to start?

- Have we given up on the loan market to address holes in the squad (full disclosure: I generally hate short term loans, but longer term deals can work out well with the right scouting)?

Any more?

Safe travels to those making the journey tonight! As for the rest of us, who's streaming?

Bit worried about this one. For all the late drama on Saturday by all accounts we were well off the pace in the first half and Darlington are fighting for their lives. A couple of quick goals would help settle the nerves!

Ah, good to have football back!

Got exactly what we deserved - came roaring out the traps and played some genuinely lovely stuff for the first half an hour but for all our possession we barely gave Jaz Singh a thing to do. And then Tamworth clearly shifted things around a bit, started pressing us a little better and it was all downhill from there - they deserved the three points.

I'm already a bit worried by the lack of a Plan B - there didn't seem to be much on the subs bench that was likely to change the dynamic of the game. And I'm already sick of hearing about our "small squad". We've had an entire summer to prepare for the new season so for the management to keep reminding us how small the squad is doesn't sit well. Your job is to ensure we have options, so crack on and get on it!

Positives? Excellent attendance, and that first half hour/40 mins we really were playing some excellent passing football. But 30 mins of decent footy isn't going to pass muster.

Onwards to Southport, who've had a shocking start so hopefully will be desperately low on confidence and a good way to bounce back.

I'll be axe throwing in Liverpool so I won't be able to even give this one a listen but safe travels to those venturing up to Derbyshire and I hope the weather is kind for you.

I've gone for a draw in Ken's prediction league mainly because based on pre-season I've absolutely no idea how good we are so I'm hedging my bets!

I'm afraid I'm going to be quite irritating over the course of the season asking how we played now I can't get to games!

Twitter reaction seemed to imply last night was a classic game of two halves and while the scoreline obviously reflected that it sounded like the performance was chalk and cheese? And this Oliver Wilson lad from Mansfield is going to be a proper striker?

All very quiet after the defeat to County.

How did we look? What formation were we playing? And did everyone manage to get their hands on a home shirt?!

Big news for those of us who've traditionally struggled to do many midweekers: all NL North and South games not subject to the 3pm Saturday blackout will be streamed this season on National League TV. So this will include the Bank Holiday 3pm games too - which I've always had a hard time getting to.

I've yet to see the details on funding and how monies will be split up, and no doubt after Wrexham rushed the board into it last season there'll be some controversy about that not being thought through and so on, but from a purely selfish standpoint this is excellent news.
