The B-Ark / Inequality

At a time when the amounts paid to Premier League clubs has reached unimagined heights, I see that lesser clubs that have the misfortune to go into administration will now be deducted 12 points instead of 10. I am minded of Matthew 13:12 -
For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him
shall be taken away even that he hath.

Sad to see our old rivals have finally gone to the wall. Thankful that we are still around. There but for the grace of God...

The B-Ark / Yellows?

Maybe I've been dozing, but I have just noticed the top of the page. "COME ON YOU YELLOWS!"

It makes old supporters like me shudder. We have always been the Black and Amber, for years longer than The Pilgrims, back to the time of Shoddy's Lane and playing Spurs, we were already steeped in the history of Black and Amber.

To use an old expression: when I hear Yellows someone just walked over my grave.

I am feeling my age a bit these days, and so on a visit to Boston today, I had to stop for a breather on the town bridge. After a few moments, a rather tall and somewhat intimidating young man approached me. I need not have worried. He very kindly asked if I needed assistance and when I assured him that I was all right, he went on his way. It left me with a pleasant feeling, and shows the other side of the debate regarding our immigrant population.

The B-Ark / Discipline

Having watched yesterday's helping on the box, and seen a manager defend his player's elbowing of an opponent as 'unintentional', it occurs to me that we have an inconsistency.

If a keeper comes out in a one-on-one and arrives a fraction late, the attacker will take the opportunity to go down if he can manage to stumble over the keeper. Now, in these circumstances, it must be obvious that the keeper's contact with the striker was unintentional. In fact he would be doing is best to avoid contact, while making what is a vain attempt to reach the ball.

The usual outcome is 1) the keeper is sent off, 2) a penalty is awarded, 3) the keeper receives a suspension, benefiting other team(s) not involved in the match.

If the keeper's intention is irrelevant to the punishment, shouldn't the elbower's intention be equally so? In which case, why is the manager wasting his breath defending him? As it turns out, the player is to be charged since the referee has admitted to not seeing the incident, but if it had been at our level, then the odds are that no camera would have picked up the evidence for a charge and so he would have got away with it.

The B-Ark / Sad news from Crawley
« on: March 22, 2011, 11:04:54 PM »
From the Brighton Argus today:

Crawley Town FC was in mourning tonight after Bruce Winfield, the man crediting for revitalising the club, died.

Mr Winfield, 61, passed away in St Catherine's Hospice in the town after a brave battle against cancer.

A supporter for more than 50 years, Mr Winfield came back onto the club's board in 2009 and as well as putting in money of his own he found other investors willing to help finance the club.

Last July he announced that the club was debt-free and embarking on a bid to achieve Football League status.

This season Reds reached the fifth round of the FA Cup and are currently top of the Blue Square Bet premier by nine points.

A club spokesman said: "Everyone at Crawley Town Football Club is devastated by this sad news.

"Bruce has been associated with the football club for over 50 years as a lifelong supporter and later as an important figure in revitalising the club's fortunes and will be sadly missed by all.

"Bruce is survived by his wife Silpa, who with him has contributed greatly towards our current success."

Sympathies to Crawley Town. Will there be changes and who will be affected? Time will tell.

Will there be a service this season? I have heard that these threads have been outlawed, but that may be only for Premiership and League clubs.

John's cancer has been "virtually eradicated". However, he still faces an "arduous journey ahead to complete recovery" and requires extensive surgery to remove "abnormal masses" in his lung and brain over the forthcoming months.

Let's all spare a moment to wish him well in his continuing struggle.
