I mentioned Gemmill but there were loads of stars from the forties onwards who played for opponents, especially in friendlies, charity matches and testimonials. In the sixties I remember seeing Stan Matthews playing for a Port Vale XI, Derek Temple with Wigan and Kevin Keegan playing on the wing for Scunthorpe in a Lincs Senior Cup game. And Barry Fry for Barnet!

Another suggestion for inclusion in a programme - full internationals who've played for Boston? I count 15: Don Donovan, Jack Doran, Paul Gascoigne, Phil Gray, Asa Hartford, Kevin Hector, Eric Houghton, Derek Kevan, Andy Kirk, Pat McConnell, Andy Marriott, Ray O'Brien, Ludovic Quistin, Mel Sterland and Fred Tunstall. Some great players amongst that lot!

Not to mention other internationals who've played at York Street - what a privilege it was to see the great Archie Gemmell give a masterclass in 1974.

Re your piece in the Kidderminster programme about non-Boston United related events at the ground.

There was a huge pageant at the ground in 1951, as part of the Festival of Britain. The theme was the history of Boston from AD 654 to 1951. The crowd was estimated to be 9,000. Lincolnshire Film Archive has a film of the occasion.

So the Sports Editor of The Standard has decided to publicise a Boston United related book then.

Hello

I'm trying to get hold of the Boston Town v United programme of July 14th 2004 (Town's 40th anniversary). Has anyone got a spare copy I could buy?

Cheers

Doug

Well, it's 9 months on and I have to say how disappointing the response has been from the Boston area. Nothing from the Boston Standard or Boston Target. Likewise, the Lincolnshire Echo. Or, for that matter the courtesy of replies to my emails from key individuals at those papers. The only reply I got from Lincolnshire newspapers was from Trevor Green, the Sports Editor of the Grimsby Telegraph, who put a piece about the book in that paper.

We received compliments from Graeme Kent and the present head of St Thomas School but no further interest from the school or former pupils. Craig Singleton ensured there was a mention on the club website. However, despite the thousands of words on Boston United related twitter feeds, nothing about 'United People' on them. I'm still waiting to hear back from Craig about sales at the club but, as I sent him 70 copies and he hasn't asked for more, that means definite sales in Boston have been no more than 71! Quite frankly, this lack of interest is staggering.

Evans offered to resign after that Trophy defeat. Why wasn't it accepted - could have saved a whole lot of bother.

A new book is out now - 'United People. Boston United Players' Stories'.

The book contains interviews with former Boston United players by pupils at St Thomas' CE School (during 1989 and 1990). Those interviewed included Keith Alexander, Gordon Bolland, Don Donovan, Jimmy Fell, Reg Harrison, Eric Houghton, Arthur Mann, Steve Thompson (the ex-Lincoln City and Charlton one) and Matt Tees.

Me (Doug Lowe) and my son (James) have now edited these interviews and added a wealth of information and graphics.

Further details can be found at https://unitedpeoplebook.wordpress.com/

I've just found a reference in the England Football Online website to a player called Alf Quantrill, who started out with Boston Swifts, joined Derby in 1914, then Preston for £4000 in 1921. He played 4 times for England in the early 1920s.

At www.friardale.co.uk/Gem/1922/Gem%200771-A.pdf there's a copy of 'The Gem' comic with an article about Quantrill on page 8 (and his photo on the front cover).

Has anyone written a history of football in Boston, especially covering the pre United days?

The reason I ask is because I've come across a player called Bill Julian who played at the Lord Nelson Field in the 1890s against Royal Arsenal (yes, THAT Arsenal), who signed him a few days later and he became their captain. Bill played for a team called Boston Excelsior.

I know there were other teams in the 19th and early 20th centuries before Boston Town, including Boston Swifts, but no nothing about them either. Talking of Boston Town, I have a team photo from the 1920s, that may include a player called Jack Doran, who had previously had a good career, including playing for Manchester City and Ireland.

The B-Ark / Third team

Have United ever had a third team at some point i.e. as well as a first team and reserve team, and, if so, when and what league(s) were they in?
