Title: The perils of going full time
Post by: Oakham Pilgrim on January 28, 2022, 01:48:22 PM
I see Gloucester's experiment is finishing. I particularly like the line about them going back to it if onfield fortunes improve. Rather daft if you do better part time. We seem to have played some of our best stuff against full time sides.

I believe that's how we also describe our model, to be fair...

still poncey :)
bit like referring to our coalman as being highly involved in mineral distribution....
any way I'll take a helicopter view,  then run it up the flag pole to see who salutes and get back to you  :)

Not sure what other words you'd use to describe it!

Ha! Fair. Then again David Newton says himself that Boston run themselves as much like a full-time club as possible without actually being full-time, but what that means in reality is I think an extra training session a week??

Semi professional back in the day

We train Monday and Thursday nights. Used to be Tuesday and Thursday, but we'd lose a session if we had a midweek game - no longer the case, unless it's at BPA on a Monday!

I think most full time outfits train a few hours most days. Should in theory make a big difference.

Sums up what is wrong about the game - too much money and not necessary being spent wisely. Regional Non-League Teams going full-time? Semi-professional is totally fine for our level of football!

Anyone know how many are full time in our league?

Off the top of my head it's York, Fylde, Gateshead(?) and Kidderminster, with Gloucester now moving to their "hybrid" system.

Gateshead definitely are. My mate supports them. He was surprised to learn we wasn't. He and some fellow Gateshead fans were under the impression we were full time. Thanks for the info.

On the televised Gateshead FA Cup match it stated that they were full time and their wage bill was £300,000 a year. Not much on average per person to live on

That doesn't sound right. That's about £14k a year each for the playing squad. Over a ten month contract, that's basically minimum wage.

I can only assume Gateshead are stretching the definition of "full time" a bit and many of their players have other part-time jobs to supplement their wages, whereas ours have full-time jobs to supplement their part-time hours with us!

Gateshead fell foul to financial irregularities not so long back.  So maybe figures quoted on TV should be taken with a pinch of salt.
