Bearing in mind the regime at the date of this fixture do you think the attendance could be  be understated ?   after all anyone can make mistakes and they made plenty .

Did any of those young Manchester United players become regular first team players?

For Man Utd? No.

David Fox had a decent FL career with Blackpool, Norwich and Plymouth. Alan Tate spent forever at Swansea, including the Premier League. Daniel Nardiello was a journeyman striker in the FL and played for Wales. John Rankin played most of his career in the SPL.

I remember having the feeling of being conned. It was not advertised as a X1.  After we bought the tickets, did we then realise that the first team was abroad and a Man U 11 was playing elsewhere.

No - but one of them played in the Man Utd reserves.

I mentioned on the YouTube description what happened to some of the players.

Quite possibly - because it was quoted as a sell out crowd and the capacity of York Street at the time was over 6000.  Maybe the 18 in the 5184 was incorrectly written down (5841!!)

I distinctly remember it being announced as full capacity. We didn't actually make over 6k capacity until we got promoted, presumably by adding toilets to the York Street end. I think all 4 sides had to have separate facilities, and the ability to section off them all individually (presumably due to the computerised-system that was then installed).

Seem to recall that the capacity for this match was reduced because of health & safety. It certainly wasn't full to actual capacity as there was easily room for more.

And didn't we fall for the same con the next season Mick v Liverpool ?

The Town End certainly wasn't full as we stood with plenty of room around us and we were certainly conned into watching a kids team really.

I understand the capacities today are:
Main Stand 1,323
York Street    877
Spain Road 2,000
Town End   1,500
-----------------------
Total.          5,700

Same season, I thought. Was delayed and played mid-season (December).

Stephen Warnock (future England international) played that night, as did Frode Kippe (still playing pro-football in Norway), John Welsh (Hull, Tranmere, Preston), Neil Mellor (Liverpool, Preston and now a Sky reporter) and John Miles (Macclesfield).

Yet when the ground was rebuilt to almost the same spec it is now, capacity was 12000 or something
I've. No doubt the town end could get 3 or 4000 in and similar with spayne lane, with 2-3k in York St end

Assume it must be a Health & Safety issue.  No doubt many more could be fitted in but 'the old days' are just that I'm afraid.

Loads of restrictions were put on grounds after Hillsborough.

The cordoned off sections of the Town End must have taken 3-400 hundred off the capacity as well.

Why are they cordoned off?

Probably easier than removing the pigeon crap.
I have no idea really.

I guess its because  the spectators hide the averts on the back walls .

It's alright shoving 3000 in the Town End, until we score and everyone gets crushed...

I think "capacity" back then was quite simply determined by how many people would physically fit in the ground. If it was that simple, yes, York Street probably would hold 10,000 even today (green seats reduce standing numbers). But these days capacity is quite rightly determined by how many people the ground can SAFELY hold, given the facilities available and turnstiles/exits.

Why are they cordoned off?

I think the concrete is in a pretty poor condition and the club didn't want to spend the money rectifying it - which is fair enough for a stadium that's about to be demolished.

Makes sense.  Take as an economic thing.  About 400 less fans, so lost revenue of just over £4000 ( if a sell out ). I would think the cost of replacing concrete would outweigh the ticket revenue.

Yeah, the Town End "wings" have been exposed to the elements since the stand was built so it's no great surprise the terracing has deteriorated. Just not worth fixing.
