Title: Pre - season friendlies
Post by: youngchubby69 on July 05, 2018, 07:57:04 PM
I see Grant Roberts is in our team tonight, along with Wafalu things had gone quiet regarding him.
Really good to see Grant playing again.

I might be wrong but Basford seem to have Greg Tempest playing for them...

They are funded by the chairman of Notts County, so they are spending big, l would imagine it's a feeder club to County.
So no Jonny Margetts tonight then ??

They had some good names in there. A few players that was good at this level and the one above so some big money spent to get them there

Hardy doesn't fund Basford. Notts may rent training facilities down there but that's all

Basford are self funding. They've got a couple of wealthy businessmen in the background but Hardy is not one of them

Their facilities are second to none at Step 3 level and with a little tweaking could get to Step 1 level. They pay big money out for that level (10k transfer fees and 400 plus a week) and if they get it right could well be in NLN next season but the Northern Prem is increasingly tough

Terrible defeat. Only to be expected after a shocking summer recruitment progeamme that has made us a laughing stock. Adam Murray was unbeaten in his first four friendlies last season. We need immediate changes - and a new ground.

I see you are full of positivity already, Adam Murray was a total joke, winning friendlies is all he could do, short memory you have, were did Murray leave us, was it second from bottom with a load of his summer recruitment shite.
You seriously need to get a grip of yourself, it's one friendly with new players and trialists against an promotion winning team.
If you actually get off your backside and take a trip down the A16 you will see that work is progressing on the stadium site.

Chris Munroe is one of Basford's backers, by his own admission he has spent £1.5 million on them as they have risen up through the leagues in the past few seasons.

I think it did a little, got seriously out of the bed with a sore head this morning, so apologies if my replies have been harsh and waspish.
Had a look at the stadium site yesterday, and there is a serious amount of hardcore and stone going down to form what I think is a compound / parking area.
The best view is from tritton lane.
I don't know if it is the start of the stadium works but  a positive to see work on the site.

Sorry Tytton Lane East,  heading towards Boston from Kirton on the A16, take the second exit on the Quadrant roundabout, then take the next right turn on to Tytton Lane East, on your immediate right hand side there is an opening/access and you can view the works from there.
Hope this helps you find the location.

So are you talking about the old Fanzine mag, if so l do remember it , that would be back in 80s when I started supporting Boston, I think it was the 83/84 season.
See l am not that young as youngchubby69 would lead you to believe .
I don't remember many of those magazines, but one did stick in my mind, It was an aerial photo of York Street and the caption said was something like this.
"A bird's eye view of a Martin Hardy clearance"
It made me chuckle at the time.

He will be fielding much stronger teams in the rest of the game's.

You would think that all the sqaud would be playing some part now.
Do you think CE has arranged these friendlies in these locations to have a look at trialists from different regions.
The home game this weekend should be interesting to see what team he puts out.

Not me, all I would say of concern with him is that he never truly seems 2 settle anywhere? Remember that friendly was it a couple of seasons back when he scored that interesting hat Rick against us? Didn't the omps then sell him 2 scunny? Think that may have been only the start of a Johnny merry-go-round who knows?? Surely Craig will have laid down the law??

Margetts took part in the warm up and then was sat on the bench watching, probably don't want to rush him and with trialists you have the luxury of building his fitness up more gradually and can give the trialists a good go rather than the odd 10 minutes. Expect a signing tomorrow too from what Elliott said to us

Thanks for the information, that does explain why he has not played yet, was Rollins and Walker there also.
Did Grant play tonight, and do you think any of the trialists are any good, one of them got the winning goal for us according to Twitter.

Rollins and Walker weren't there from what we saw. One of the trialists is Lamin Colley and another is Ben Middleton's twin brother. Roberts played in the second half and nearly replicated his Stalybridge worldie hitting the bar. The number 9 trialist Andre looks decent too, he scored the goal which was a finish from a couple yards out. Bit rusty tonight on the whole but got the job done.

The squad looks good, some of the players look like good pick ups and there feels like a good balance to the squad too. Think the game tonight was recorded too so dunno if it will appear on YouTube.

Willis - Made a good save one on one, didn't have much to do other than that.
Trialist Sam RB - Looked solid
McCombe - Tough tackler and decent on the ball
Qualter - Good in the air but had a couple lapses in concentration
Gough - Need a bit more time to form an opinion on him, has good moments but not consistent so far
Jackson - Looks a very astute pick up with a good engine
Wafula - Had an okay game, maybe over complicated it a few times but made some decent runs and won the majority of his headers
Abbott/Thanoj - bit off the pace tonight but had flashes of class
Harris - given time could be a solid pick up, played better last game than tonight but solid combative midfielder
Arnold - came into it more in the second half and his first touch is class
Trialist Andre ST - very good player and pacey, good poachers finish tonight
Roberts - nearly scored a worldie and looks like hes never stopped playing.
Trialist Harry  CM - very tidy player and can spot a pass
Parkin - not very vocal but a very good shot stopper, distribution was a bit off at times tonight
Trialist Jack CM - got stuck in and played some useful passes, played RB last match
Trialist Lamin Colley - Good run to set up the goal but not completely convinced by him.

Fantastic report, so all in all with the players that didn't play, Johnny,Jay and Nicky, with a few of the trialists signed up, we could have a promotion chasing side.
Saturday will be interesting against decent opposition to see how they perform, with probably more time and space on the ball.

I did a "Mindbender" about twins and noted the ones that had played for Boston United:

http://www.bufc.drfox.org.uk/puzzle36.html (http://www.bufc.drfox.org.uk/puzzle36.html)

Non-identical twins

Approximately one in every seventy births produces twins. As children they are usually raised together and share a very similar environment as they grow up. But one third of all twins born share much more than this – identical twins have exactly the same genes. Twins have always been interesting, but in recent decades they have become seriously hot property. Scientists would like to study twins. The reason for the interest is the chance to find out how our environment and our genes interact to influence our lives. Non-identical twins have genes which are as different as any normal brother or sister but their environment as they are growing up is very similar. They allow the effects of any genetic difference to be studied very accurately. Identical twins share the same genes and, more often than not, the same environment. Some identical twins, however, find themselves separated at a young age and brought up in different homes. They share all the same genes but experience a very different environment. If there are differences between them it is likely to be because of their different environments. The only twins who have played for Boston United are the Dagg brothers in the 1949/50 (http://www.bufc.drfox.org.uk/seas49.html) season. Harry Dagg went on to play for Lincoln City but his brother John never followed him to the Imps.

Here is a puzzle about twins.

The puzzle

One day Kerry celebrated her birthday. Two days later her older twin brother, Terry, celebrated his birthday. How come?

No time machines are required to come up with the solution! This puzzle won the Game Magazine competition for the best "How Come" puzzle in 1992.

I believe trialist Jack is Jack Vann, from Harrogate - was on loan at Trinity last season

Good result today 1-1, I thought we looked very good in spells.
Marriott's goal was pure class and he will get a bucket full this season.
Grant Roberts had a good game and I would like to see him get a deal.
Wafula played well and looked a handful.
Ben Middleton not so good today though.
But overall I was impressed.

Now can someone please confirm what day next week, that we are actually playing Lincoln Utd.
I have it down as Wednesday but the announcer today said Tuesday.
Both clubs fixture list say Wednesday the 18th.
Confused now l am.

That was an excellent pre-season friendly with plenty of tasty tackles and a good test. Certainly Marriots goal had class written all over it a real joy. Arnold showed what a great first touch he has and plenty of tackling when not in possession. Wafula was the outstanding player whilst on the field hardly missing a header and the perfect out ball, Craig new what he was doing in retaining him. Margetts coming on for second half had little support but showed his potential to be the leader in a lethal strike force. Think we certainly need a left back and Ryan looks like he could do with losing a pound or two. Thought Harris looked good and very industrious and our captain Brad Abbot was very good. All in all a very encouraging performance by the boys which left me very confident with an injury free run we can be right up there. EVERY ONE GO GET YOUR SEASON TICKET AND SHOW THE BOARD AND MANAGER WE ARE RIGHT BEHIND THEM.    UTP.

Lincoln Utd’s game against Lincoln City on Monday has been postponed due to the condition of their pitch. So I assume our game there must be in some doubt?

Really enjoyed the game, agreed, Wafula was my stand out player worked very hard. Grant Roberts had a good game, pleased to see he's back to full fitness. The trialist who came on at right back looked good too. Another trialist, I think his number was 19, looked hard working too.

I popped over to Boston yesterday for the match to take a few snaps of the new players. Think I got most of them. Here's a link to the usual public Facebook Album:

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10156547727049282.1073742013.570994281&type=1&l=623b5f23d9 (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10156547727049282.1073742013.570994281&type=1&l=623b5f23d9)

Here's the teamsheet to help you identify the players:

1 George Willis (Dylan Parkin 46), 2 Ben Middleton, 3 Jordan Gough (15 Ashley Jackson 46), 4 Andi Thanoj (16 Spencer Harris 46), 5 John McCombe, 6 Ryan Qualter (19 Triallist H 46), 7 Jonathan Wafula (17 Grant Roberts 46), 8 Brad Abbott (14 Triallist A 46), 9 Triallist B (12 Triallist G 46), 10 Adam Marriott (18 Jonny Margetts 59), 11 Nathan Arnold (20 Triallist D 66).

Triallist D - No 20 was Lamin Colley. Triallist B was the same one that scored the two goals in the previous two pre-season games.

Well summised Oxo, agree with pretty much everything especially combined with performances from other pre season games. Only disagreement would be the left back comment, having two options already contracted in Jackson and Gough. From what I've seen so far Jackson could be a real good find so excited to see who wins that battle for the starting LB berth

Dre Johnson joined Worksop after leaving Derby County 4 or 5 seasons ago. Since then he has played for several clubs including Matlock Town, Heanor Town, Stamford, Halesowen, Frickley, Corby Town and Alfreton Town(where I think he finished last season).

Pacey striker.

Number 9, I thought he had an excellent first half. Shame he couldn't slot the chance he had home.

Very much agree that Grant should get a deal, he is a proven player at this level and has a lot of quality about his play.
Nice to say hello to you today, but you probably wouldn't remember who I was, sat not far away from you.

According to Twitter we have Andre Johnson a striker, Harry Middleton midfielder, (Bens brother) Sam Topliss defender and utility man, Jack Vann.
Will see if any make it to the season ahead.

The Striker looked good, Sam Topliss, I think played second half at right back, looked ok too.
The other two, I can't work out which was which!!

So we lost tonight to Lincoln Utd.
I am a bit confused by it all and it just goes to show how much work is to be done with this team yet.
I am sure that things will come together, Garry Mcsheffrey from Grimsby was playing for us tonight and I thought he played well as did Grant Roberts and Andre Johnson who both scored for us.
Topliss and Mcsheffrey were both named as players tonight instead of trialists, does that mean they have signed.

I thought Jackson was outstanding tonight and looks like a very good player and find.
Harry Middleton was also named as a player.
Wafula was not here tonight but Jay was and having a run around the pitch.
