Less said about the game the better. What a bore of a game that was. Remarkably we've climbed a place. We played poorly for large parts and lacked ideas on how to attack them and win the game. You'd be forgiven in thinking we were at the other end of the table based on that lacklustre performance. Yes their equaliser took a deflection but that shouldn't give us an excuse in dropping points against them. Performances of late are difinately dropping and that could be a combination of having some players not up to the job while others are unfit and injured. It was also disappointing to hear about the aligations of racial abuse from Spayne Road. No excuse for that behaviour.
The one positive aspect being that we're still in them play off spots. Lets hope the team and manager have enough resolve to secure that play off place.

1) we didn't lose
2) we may play better and lose
3) we may play worse and win
4) Dayle starting to look sharp.
5) we're 3rd
6) their 5 should have walked for the assault on Dayle.
7) their 7 looked a good player.
8) our 8 continues to frustrate
9) ref was OK apart from not sending 5 thug off early
10) only didn't win due you a cruel deflection.

Enough resolve ?!!  We are easily going to make the play off spots. So the alleged racial abuse, was that what the ref and some steward by the dug outs in discussion about towards the end ? 95% of our fans are decent and honest, but over the last season and a half i have witnessed some unsavory moments of abuse.  I don't get why these people come to "support" this club.

I predict a 6th place finish for us. We have some tough games ahead and today's performance would indicate we will not be good enough to win them to keep us in the qualifiers. As for being smug about being 3rd in the league, nothing to be smug about. Teams around us with games in hand which if they win will put us in 6th.
IMO Jones doesn't contribute much. Sands and Southwell seem to work well together. We have a good goalie who saved us today. In the last 4 games we have 4pts out of 12. In the end we will be where we should be with what we have, not in the top 4. I hope we do get in the playoffs because it will extend the season a little bit but doubt very much we will get more than  that.

Nice to see a newbie adding to the mass of negativity that we see on here, you will fit in well !  :bunny
Top 5, not top 4 is what matters and we WILL be in that.  You know what, if we finish 5th and then play as well as we can and go up, i bet all these moaners will be the first on the pitch congratulating their poor, rubbish players !  Fickle fans, at least they are in a minority thank god.

There seems to be three types of posters on here.
1. The optimist who believes that we are good enough to win promotion despite lack of funding at the moment to keep us up there.
2. The realist who look at the league table and analyse the teams around us, their games in hand on us and that if they win that game in hand and keep toe to toe with us will put us in 6th place.
3. Those that get slagged and abused for expressing a different point of view to those that think the sun shines out of their lower orrifice. It's no wonder several posters on here in recent months stopped posting because of that, including me. I only re registered to see if it was still going on. I left this forum and 'got a life' as they say. I am now going to do the same thing again which should make some of you very happy because then you can form your own mutual appreciation society and always be right between yourselves. GOODBYE.

Just to keep it in perspective, in the last 5 games North Ferriby have taken 2 points out of a possible 15 while we have taken 7 in which we consider to be a bad run.

Good to see you back for a short spell ,  not like those knockers who predicted in October that we had missed the play-offs

Response to points raised .....

1.  I,m not optimistic enough to say we will get promoted , although I am confident we will make the play-offs .  As you rightly mention the lack of funding compared to some other clubs would make it  commendable to make play-offs .

2   The realist realise that the league will not be decided just on the "games in hand" but on the overall form of the teams in the remaining games .  If you analyse less selective and extend on   Cavilier,s formula you will find Harrogate are on coarse to win the league and NFU will miss out .

3.  Disagreeing with someone,s is not deemed abuse ,   naive not to expect disagreement on a forum .     The only person to receive unwarranted abuse on here that I can recall is Dennis Greene ,   to his credit Greene has refrained from responding to the rubbish .

Den has received so much abuse not only on here, but on another fans forum. To me, and many others, it seems that just a few people are making things personal and showing hate towards our manager no matter what he, or his team are doing on the field. The abuse is irrelevant to the club, team or manager.  Its just like a relationship bust up and not letting go of things, a bit like a dog with a bone !  These so called fans are not helping this club move in the right direction, but i guess when you have an opinion like mine, you then expect to be called a happy clapper !!  No, i am a supporter who see's that we are in the play offs and have a decent squad, all be it, in a competitive league.

Those who want him out ....careful for what you wish for.
I personally think the team and club would be much duller without him

The vast majority of fans only judge the manager on one thing ,  results and stability .

When was the last time we have had the stability and results to match the last three years ?, This achieved with lack of funding as Got a life pointed out .

I don't like to see our club's name tarnished. Can anyone from the Spayne Road side explain what happened?  If anyone witnessed any racial abuse then they should make a statement to the police and make sure the perpetrator never sets foot in York Street or The Quadrant ever again.

I totally agree, they should be banned for life if found guilty. I wasn't at the game at the weekend, so i cannot comment on the incident itself.  Anyone know what the alleged words said was ?  The ref in my eyes, once he was told, should have gone over to the fan involved and stood there until a steward grabbed him then there would be no appeal to find the offender now.  It really sickens me that our good club is now tarnished again thanks to an idiot who calls them self a fan. If we as a club are guilty, it worries me what financial penalties we could find ourselves given.

Im a self confessed happy clapper, my initial comment to start the thread was a bit tongue in cheek, didnt think it would end up being factual.

I think the playoffs are going to be a close run thing, still think our midfield are the problem (if we have one) and we often struggle against the physical sides. But we are heading towards another exiciting end of season, ive supported BUFC 40 odd years and ive seen some seasons over by the new year and crowds dwindling and stood at the town end with about 50 people in a crowd of a few hundred. Lets be posiitive we are in the mix and have a chance, if you had offered me that at the start of the season considering there are some biggish spenders in the league I would have took it.

Thought we were below par on Saturday - not as bad as against Stalybridge but not good.

Think our best front pairing is Southwell and Jones - although they haven't had the opportunity to play together for a while. Not convinced by Sands. He huffs and puffs but not much end product. I still like the idea of having Robbins in the squad. I see he has extended his loan at Corby, despite not playing much.

The guy in midfield, who we got from Hednesford doesn't look any better than say Dixon as far as I can see. He has been labelled the non-league Yaya Toure in some quarters, but really ? I see Venney has gone back to Grimsby. Really can't understand why he was brought in - obviously too lightweight for our requirements. Did any of the management actually see him play before getting him in or was it just a case of here is a player from a higher level, let's just take him ?

On evidence from Saturday, I think the defensive unit looks ok.

So, maybe just a couple of bits of tinkering and we could get over the line into the play-offs.

I think Hilliard is wasted out on the left, much prefer him in the middle, far more effective.
Probably worth starting with Dayle and Jones up front and sands as an important impact sub.

Robbins can't even get a starting position at Corby, doesn't that tell you something ?  He had pace, yes. But Sands does far more teamwork, and that is what this game is about, being a team !

leftback - Sands is a striker and we need him to be scoring. Yes, he runs a lot but how effective is he ? He's hardly a great target man. Robbins knows where the net is and can change a game in an instant. I'm sure it was Greene that said upon signing him "He should be playing a league higher".

Maybe DG doesn't know how to manage him properly - ie: consistently get the best out of him.

Maybe he is a disruptive element in the dressing room?
The fact is he has the ability to play higher but isn't....is that an attitude problem?
Just things we as fans don't get to see on the training ground or dressing room.
Maybe just being a decent player isn't enough to become part of a team...
Just thinking aloud :)

TEP,  so what you are saying is Den doesn't know how to manage players properly ?!! Are you in the Den out camp by any chance ???
As for Robbins, it was said about him at the time as when we looked at him we see potential. Sadly, when he came to the club that potential lasted a few games then i recall one game where he was played through twice in the spell of 15mins, and both times never made the runs !  Its also well known that Stamford fans warned us of this laziness. While i agree that he has an eye for the goal, its when he wants it.  Do you have an inconsistent goal getter with pace that is not used to its full potential, or a player that puts in 100%, plays some class touches and brings others into play. What is otherwise known as a team player ?!

We've still got a good chance of making the playoffs and if we get there that will be be a good season, win them and it would be a great season!

Whether we make playoffs or not looks like it's going to come down to some of the upcoming big games against other teams challenging for playoffs. Still got to play Fylde, North Ferriby, Tamworth, Harrogate and last home match v Nuneaton could be a winner gets a playoff spot match.

The midfield hasn't looked solid since Jordan Richards got recalled, if Mills is fit Saturday pushing Garner into midfielder may be best to toughen our midfield up a bit. Would be tempted to get Dixon back too.

Getting Dayle back playing again we have our goalscorer. I'm going to predict a fourth place finish and then winning playoffs! However all going to come down to those big upcoming '6 pointers' against other playoff rivals to where we finish.

I think we need to go back to playing 4-5-1/4-3-3, with a stopper in midfield - whether that's Garner or Burgess (impressed in that role at BPA late on) is up to Zak's fitness.

Jones - Southwell - Rollins as the front three, Roberts, Hilliard + 1 other in the middle.
Title: Re: have we got a game today??
Post by: womble on February 29, 2016, 10:59:27 PM
Evident from Saturday for me was the fact that we had two strikers on the pitch that were working effectively in tandem. Sands would run and pressure he opposition and whenever the ball was played into him (on the floor or in the air) he would hold the ball up and look for the movement of Southwell, evident from the chance early in the game (and the identical move later in the first half which took Southwell a bit wider of the goal) which didn't quite settle for Southwell to finish. From that display I can't see how either Jones or Robbins can be rated so highly that they go straight into that strike force. I don't think Sands is the best ST in the league by a long shot but he offers significantly more than either Jones or Robbins, in terms of work rate, awareness and general team play. He won headers, held the ball up and did everything you ask for from a ST with his skillset, especially playing alongside Southwell who will feed off him a lot.

Also, the sooner the awful set piece routines are kicked out the better, we have a strong aerial presence and decide to work the ball into the box from tight angles. Waste so many good opportunities from set pieces its unbelievable.

Keep the back four the same however think the midfield needs to be:
                                               Kane, Hilliard ,Roberts ,Jay
Yah yaa (given free role in a 5)
                                                               or
                                                     Dale and Jones
                                                      (up top if a 2)

Hilliard need to be in center midfield he is our most comfortable player on the ball when Zac is not in the side.
*and to stop going from back to front in 1 aimless ball.

According to a club statement, the supporter who racially abused Wayne Thomas has been identified and issued with a lifetime ban.

Good stuff from the club - an entirely appropriate punishment and a strong message to everyone else that such behavior is not acceptable.
