Post by: Shauneyg on May 09, 2013, 07:56:09 PM
Its all very quite on the signings front. I thought we were expecting a few signings soon after the season finished?? Any ideas on when we will see some activity on the signings front??

Dennis did say he had short list and that he "wanted to get business done quickly" which may me one or two have said no?

I really hope we sign some hungry players and not players that are just here to pick up the money, (GTFC players?) I hope not . Would love a top left back and centre back and a big forward.

It would also be good to hear soon if those offered deals have signed as I'm sure DG won't have given them too long to decide.

Newbie, with (very) close links to the manager?

Have GTFC players turned down the offers?

Is Timms hungry, or have BUFC made him a better offer?

1  Possibly
2  Don,t know if we approached players from trinity yet. Greene has not openly said he has not ruled approaches out but has other options first.
3 Hungry to play i hope as we cant offer much in the way of high wages

Reading Timms' interviews, he's at BUFC because we are a big non-league club, and can guarantee first team football. I believe he's Nottingham-based, so it isn't too far to travel, either. I don't think he's in a position to hold himself out for ransom with his past.

His interview also said he could have gone into the reserves at a league club but felt his best position to take was number 1 at a big non league to get himself games, experience and a foothold to get back to where he wants.

That's where we differ then, because I don't care if they chose us because there is more money on offer. DG wont spend what he cant afford or hasn't got, so on the premise he wants them to play, I don't give a nuns armpit how they arrive

A word of caution, if you are to hang about on here, you would be well advised not to mention Grantham players or indeed any from lower leagues, as its a shoe in that the minute you do, the second in fact, you will at best be hounded out or worse, ridiculed, mocked and told to sit in the naughty corner by many who feel that to journey up from pastures UCL, Evostick North and or Prem is a step impossible for players to take...so be warned my friend, be afraid, be very afraid, and why I feel you should take sanctuary behind the call for senior players only to be signed! ;D

At least Evans , for all his faults  usually had the spine of his team signed up by mid May..
If I was contemplating a season ticket I wouldnt bother until at least 3 solid signings made .
Management is all about strength of character in any sphere and in soccer you need the contacts as well .
Plus sailing close to the wind at times but not over the mark  ..
              Being a Fergie  not an E***s .
So will the present incumbant at BUFC  cut the mustard  ? And cut it long-term ?
I know what my answer would be .

Could a new signing be on the cards today or tomorrow, DG is certainly putting some interested tweets out there

Greene poised to strengthen Boston defence

BUSY Boston United boss Dennis Greene is on the brink of strengthening his squad again after turning his attention to the Pilgrims' defence.

Greene was last night closing in on two centre-backs while also monitoring a left-back.

The United boss has also held talks with a striker, who has agreed to join the club for pre-season training.

But after releasing Phil Watt and Paul Lister at the end of last season, the centre-back area is a priority.

"I've held positive talks with a couple of defenders and I'm hoping to get those deals done this week," said Greene, who hinted one of his existing players, Conor Marshall, will be his first choice right-back next season.

"I'm also looking at a left-back while we've got Conor (Marshall) at right-back.

"I've been talking to a striker too because it's important we have a plan B next season. He should join up with us in pre-season when I'm sure we'll be inundated with other players wanting trials."

Having signed goalkeeper Ashley Timms and midfielder Gary Mills, Greene is delighted with his summer dealings so far.

"It was important that we got a few signed up early on," added the former Histon boss.

"The last thing we wanted to do is leave it and then end up with the dregs at the end of the summer.

"We'll have a look at players in pre-season too."

Meanwhile, next season's Conference North line-up took shape over the weekend.

Brackley missed out on a place in the Conference following their play-off final defeat to FC Halifax.

Meanwhile, Hednesford secured promotion from the Evo-Stik League following their play-off final victory over FC United.

Stockport, Telford and Barrow will join Conference North after being relegated.

I actually think you ask a good question. Yes it was good to see our talisman signed up that's for sure and a couple of others, and I think the new signings all appear to be very decent which is great, but is it me or are others getting just a little concerned that of the 7,8 players DG offered terms to some three or four weeks ago now, and unless of course I missed the announcement, none as yet has taken up those offers

If nothing else it does invite a supplementary question of why?

If as DG has suggested he signs a couple of centre backs in the next couple of days, and this might have already been done, that all adds to the strength and numbers, add a couple of midfield arrivals and a new keeper but it still leaves another 6 of 7 to come in, and why the original question can perhaps be re-aired, more so I suppose after reading his comments above, about the need, the wish to complete a lot of his business nice and early and not rely on having to endure as he put it the "Dregs" ! which is a rather odd thing to suggest

Boston and "Dregs" not two words that I would have ever seen joined together that's for sure

Of course one assumes there will also be some new signings come pre season, but I also find it a bit strange that players, including with the inference made a 'Target' style centre forward for a plan B need to trial? Surely, certainly hopefully, they are simply deemed good enough or not, and if it' the latter, or even if there is even any doubt don't bring them down in the first place especially as the pool from which to sign players is with the leagues all finished bigger than it will ever be

I guess we will soon know though

Similar posts that appear on here and other clubs forums every season at this time .
Like us most clubs tie their best 2/3 players up early (ie  Alty with Reeves and Whatmore )
Players have 28 days do decide if to renew contracts and bide their time . astute one at least .
"Have a look pre-season " can cover many things ,  ie fitness etc .

St Albans have started early by signing BAZZA .

Looks a good signing, my initial thought was another young, unknown centre half.  However, a quick google tells me he made 22 appearances in the conference on loan at Altrincham and then 44 appearances with Stockport at the same level in 2011/2012.  It seems he was quite highly rated there and they wanted to keep him and offered terms. However, due to financial conditions, couldn't offer a decent deal and had to release him.  He ended up at Corby so has gained a good grounding at this level.  Looks a solid signing, but I'd still like to see him partnered with a more experienced centre half.

I have to say, the signings so far have looked very good, which in previous years hasn't necessarily been the case.  Starting to feel really optimistic about next season.
