Title: What's gone wrong?
Post by: LPRA on February 15, 2011, 08:39:10 PM
Since the enforced winter break we've been poor. Is it that teams have sussed us out or is the loss of McKeown too big to take? He was quality and gave the defence confidence....any chance of getting him back?!

Players like Yates, Semple and Davidson especially seem to be different players with a bit of confidence.

McKeown was a loss, but don't forget he let in 4 at Droylsden and 3 vs Gainsboro.  Murphy has been a bigger loss -not just losing his presence in the middle, but losing Canners from his stronger position of full back.

We've had too many players who have had to play whilst carrying injuries - might have got away with that last year, but this league is stronger.

My take on this season is that we will fall just short of the play offs(hope I'm wrong), we are being found out because of our small squad, budget whatever. I think Rob and Paul have done a fantastic job considering the lack of funds, but I think they will be wanting a bigger squad next season now they know what it takes to get out of this lge. The problem is where do the extra funds come from? We can't expect David & Neil to throw any more at it, I wonder what the chances of striking up a dialouge with Pat M are. If he would drop the rent to a more reasonable amount who knows? Failing that we will probably need someone to come on the board with the same vision(and money) as D&N.

dont see where the extra funds are to come from tash certainly not from malky.mabey the ever astute h+s could do there loafs and fishes thing to put together a larger squad, mabey not with the out right high standards we would like but a larger squad would be good

Personally think Haystead is just as good as Mckeown. I agree with BP, Murphy has been a big loss and so has canners at full back, he's ok at centre back but much better at right back. It's no coincidence that Murphy has only played at Eastwood since the enforced break. Also the point about players playing with injury, additionally players have probably made their injuries worse by playing on with them.

Another thought I have had is the consistency of the teams this year and the fact we're suffering from so many consistent teams, as we play 2 more games this year can only do it on ppg (points per game):

Last season
1st Guiseley played 38 pts 79 PPG 2.078
3rd Boston  played 38 pts 77 PPG 2.026

This season

Nunny played 27 pts 55 PPG 2.037
Alfreton played 20 pts 51 PPG 2.55
Telford played 24 pts 50 PPG 2.083
Boston played 26 pts 48 PPG 1.846
Guiseley played 22 pts 48 PPG 2.181

Which means as it stands last seasons champions would only be good enough to get 4th in this league and our 3rd would only be good enough for 5th...

Sorry,if your going on your calculations.
2.181 is higher than both 2.083 and 2.037?
So would not Guiseley be Second?
Anyway has a Guiseley fan and I come in peace, really hoped we both could really make a push for the top two places. To be honest can't see Alfreton messing up.They have a massive squad unlike yourselfs and us.Whilst on paper we are in a very good place in the playoffs .We are still in the FA Trophy.Should we beat Luton which is very doubtful we then have a two legged semi.Meaning we will be in the same boat as Alfreton, two, three games a week all the way in.We have a very small squad so injuries to key players will mean we will start to struggle and I mean struggle.Anyway every team will hit a bad patch so hopefully you might turn it round.Really hope you do.

Sorry if it wasn't clear, what I meant was last seasons points tally not Guiseley the team, so your team this year are points-wise better than last years even though you're in a higher league:

1) Alfy
2) Guiseley (2011)
3) Telford
4) Guiseley (2010)
5) Nunny

Obviously if I was comparing us from last year your 2010 wouldn't be in so Nunny would move up a place and our 2010 team would be in 5th.

HTH.
