Best of luck to them. Most fans on both sides have moved on, the playing staff here and there have completely changed.......rivalries come and go, they are now the big club, there's 4 divisions between us now.

It could have been us though........couldn't it?

Everyone wants to talk about Dagenham because of what went on in the Steve Evans and Garry Hill eras, but some of us have memories which stretch back even further.

Back in the 1980s, when the Conference was known as the Alliance Premier League, there was no automatic promotion into the Football League. Equally, there were many seasons when teams escaped relegation from the APL due to the fact that teams in the feeder leagues did not want the travelling for a national league or did not meet the ground grading criteria. Season-by-season, the list of clubs barely changed, and there tended to be "leagues within the league" in terms of the "haves" and the "have nots."

In the "haves" were the likes of Yeovil Town, Wycombe Wanderers, Nuneaton Borough and Altrincham. All enjoyed some success on the pitch, seemed to have a good fan base and in the infrastructure in place to go higher. All these teams needed was a change in the rules to allow non-league teams automatic promotion into the Football League.

Dagenham were very much in the "have not" camp - alongside the likes of Fisher Athleric and Trowbridge Town. They escaped relegation very marginally on a number of occasions and struggled to get attendances above 300. With the likes of West Ham and Leyton Orient in close proximity, they were punching above their weight to even stay at Alliance Premier League level.

How on earth do you get from that position to where they are now?

With down to earth owners who don't spend beyond their means, they're not completely alone, my hometown club, Cheltenham Town,  went from the Southern League to League 1 in about 5 years,  and they have very little money, they just spend it wisely.

Dagenham may have been among the "have nots", but the present Dagenham & Redbridge is an amalgamation of Dagenham, Ilford, Leytonstone and Walthamstowe Avenue; in total four well established amateur clubs.

Did Dave Cusack once manage a veriation of D&R?  Took a lot of our good players with him.  I could be wrong, old age and all that ;D

I know I'll be corrected if I'm wrong but around 1970 we used to play Wigan Athletic in the Northern Premier league and although it's taken some time look how they have done. How far up the league ladder a team goes does depend on the population and support base around them. A club should sensibly only go as high as it's income allows. Lincoln City for example should be a financially comfortable league 2 side. Any higher league would put them under severe financial difficulties( perhaps they could cope with a league one place and I'm not talking about playing ability). Boston United are very fortunate to have a Chairman who is financially astute and I don't think his ambitions for the club would go any higher than what the club could afford. It's alright having someone throwing bucket loads of money at a club but one day the money fairy will depart (I'm not talking about Mr. Newton there). Wigan exist in a very densely populated area of the country but even they are limited in their budget. I think Boston would be a comfortable Conference side and if the support base grew possibly a manageable league 2 side. Being ambitious is one thing, sometimes one has to be sensibly ambitious especially living in the middle of the biggest field in the country.
Onwards and upwards. Getting bored, roll on the new season.

Paul Shrtliff, John Mckenna,Paul Cavell & Paul Richardson all took the Redbridge Forest money, not too sure if Cusack was manager there then though.......I think by the time he went the greedy players and agents and hangers on had taken most of the cash from the ground sales etc.

Mickey Nuttell as well, if I'm not mistaken.
