I see there's a tweet from Dan saying he's on his way to The Posh. I have to say he will be missed. I was rather hoping his experience and expertise was going to be instrumental in setting the new pitch at the Quadrant. But I guess his appointment is testament to the quality of the York Street surface. Good luck to him and his "promotion" is deserved.

Absolutely, it's hugely disappointing we've lost him now with the Quadrant pitch all set to go in the New Year, but he undoubtedly deserves his promotion - so well done Dan, good luck in your new job, and thanks for giving us the best pitch I've ever seen down at YS.

I think he’s done a great job this season, after all, he had last season to get the pitch in good order because rarely was any football played on it. 😁

And Dan was only part-time with us - he was a full-time greenkeeper at Spalding, I believe.

Those jobs aren't fantastically paid but its more a labour of love.
I'd love to be in a position to learn the ground care side of pitch maintenance but while I have to work full time I'm not going to be able to do the vocational side of things.
Its an unbelievably interesting career to follow, plus you get the bonus of being in the fresh air most of the time and combining a hobby with your passion.

I certainly don't envy him with the amount of rain we have had recently, even the best drained pitches would struggle to cope.
You only have to look at the land and that is in an dire state.
If now start to get heavy and prolonged frosts the pitches will freeze very hard and it may penetrate deep down,because of the saturated ground.
Then of course if it then thaws out quickly the pitches will become very heavy and sticky.
Bloody nightmare.

There is an awful lot of water lying everywhere.
The under pitch drainage has not been instant.

Yeah I was wondering about that, not sure how much of the drainage has been installed though? As far as I can tell they just cleared it of weeds and laid a few layers of better quality topsoil down.

The Chief Scientist and Policy Director at Greenpeace UK mentioned the new pitch area a couple of weeks back on the Today programme.
Hopefully the plans include enough storm water storage capacity and a couple of hydro-brakes 8)

No Drainage under the pitch yet just capped pipe work (so still sealed) Ground would need to settle first or the land just runs into the system resulting in a complete Blockage. I to had this concern so did a bit of looking it up

There should be catch-pits before the pitch drainage joins the main storm water system to avoid this blockage happening. :blank:
There's also likely to be a drainage layer below the topsoil, with a geotextile membrane to prevent the fines washing through into the pipework. 8)
