Former Luton Town striker Ricky Miller has been charged with five offences in connection with a racially-aggravated assault on a taxi driver.
Mr Miller, 26, of Valence End, Dunstable, was arrested following an alleged incident in Hockliffe, Bedfordshire, in April.
He will appear at Luton Magistrates' Court later this month.
A second Luton Town player, Shaun Whalley, who was also arrested, will face no further action.
Mr Miller, who played as a striker for the League Two side, had his contract terminated "following an internal investigation into a breach of club discipline", a spokesman for the side said.
He faces one count of racially-aggravated common assault and one count of assault by beating.
The footballer has also been charged with two counts of using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour with intent to cause fear or provoke violence and one count of racially aggravated use of threatening words or behaviour.
