Have only been to one pre-season game but have a couple of questions - have we got enough pace up front without a Reece Thompson type ? Do we need more height up front too ?

Defence needs some work for sure, Harry Middleton does not play well with Thanjo.
The ref was a joke and that's an understatement.
We are not going to gel straight away, this is a brand new team, except for a few players who were with us from last season.
Players who did well last night,
Jackson, Roberts, Marriott, Abbott, Johnson, Mcsheffrey and Walker considering this is his first pre-season game.
Mcoombe looks as if he is struggling a bit.
The sending off was probably warranted but not really necessary in a local cup game, the Lincoln Utd players and fans looked as shocked as we did.
But overall we did at times play some slick football and in time that will become the norm.

Well that’s the optimism gone after 1 competitive match, bloody rubbish.

Who do people prefer in goal? Parkin has stated he wants to be number one but Willis is more experienced

Can not say im to worried and it did not come as a shock at all. a lot of ppl forget thats a new team with only a few thats played a handfull of games together. We have to tune into each other and get a playing style going yet. Elliot said up untill now the players have only been doing fitness and games so id expect things will start to change going forward.

Plenty of silk there and once its together then i think we have a entertaining team. Still look weak at the back thou

Just did not look like a side who have had enough hours together, learning to read each other's games yet. Anticipate positioning and runs etc. My prelim observations:

Parkin - really lacked confidence, two fumbled balls and a fair bit of shakiness before the horror mistake that was a red.
McCombe - not match fit or down to race weight, yet

In contrast;

Arnold - oozes quality
Johnson - fast and gonna be a lot of trouble to defences at this level
McSheffrey (when did he sign, or has he??) - looks solid, aggressive and fairly pacey

Last night was my first pre season and although we have lots of fire power i think Johnson looks the player that could be our weapon. nimble and fast.

It is nice looking at the team and the first thing that hits you is at least 3 players that can be 20 plus goal getters. A midfield nightmare of combo's

I wondered if three games in seven days in this heat and on rock hard pitches may have had a bearing on our game. Roberts brought some pace and quick passing when he came on, we were missing that in the first half.

Is/was McSheffrey a triallist?

Yep. Was at Grimsby last season, but is mainly known for spells at Coventry and Birmingham. Would add a lot of experience to the attack.

A Coventry legend for sure, l know he is 35 but l would give him a contract, he has always been good at linking up play, and being aggressive.
His experience might be invaluable this season.

I'd like to see him sign as he has proven pedigree and might be that 'old head' which we need in the mix. Regarding 'older' players though....who was the best over mid 30's signing for the Pilgrims ? So many good ones, and a few not so good over the last couple of decades.

Jim Smith or Bobby Svarc - if they were over 30!
Title: Re: Lincoln united
Post by: pieman pete on July 20, 2018, 11:31:28 PM
Bobby Svarc was nowhere near 30 and I think Jim Smith was only about 28 when he came as player/manager, both superb players though. Bobby Svarc is the best player I have ever seen play for Boston United. UTP

Bobby Svarc and John Froggat, now that was a forward line to fear.

Following updates sounded like had we took chances we'd have put the game to bed by half time?
But the defence.... That will stop us going up if we can't improve on last seasons lack of clean sheets

If the defence doesn't improve we will have a job to avoid relegation josh .

I think the midfield didn't help the situation , Thanjo and Middleton did not track back enough and we didn't keep possession enough up front.
That caused the defence to get overwhelmed.
The defence going forward should be a fit Mcoombe, Middleton, Qaulter and Jackson.

Kevin Hector who joined Boston United in 1978 aged 34 after a long and successful career with Bradford Park Avenue and Derby County. But after spells with Boston, Burton Albion and Vancouver Whitecaps he went back to Derby County for a couple more seasons.

Sorry Ken I have to disagree on this one. I felt he was one of the worst signings we have made. Defo one of those who only came for the money and put little effort into it either.

Agreed .
Seem to recall a young lad called Chris Cook playing for us at that time .

Gordon Bolland was decent for us and of course, being a local boy he had a very good football league career. Him and Kevin Hector were often 2 yards quicker in thought on the pitch than there fellow team mates and weren't always as appreciated as they should have been.

He used to back out of 60/40 challenges in his favour, never fully committed, unlike Billy Howells and John Lakin - to name but two.

Tim Ryan wasn't that bad a defender during his spell here, think he was just over the thirty mark when signing for us ? I'd put him in the reasonable over thirties column.

Reading topics like this always remind me of a visit to you tube. How you go to watch something and randomly move to watching other subjects but never really notice or realise how you got there
