New Season Predictions
« on: August 07, 2014, 12:46:23 PM »
With anticipation growing ever greater for the start of the new season, I always find it quite interesting to try to predict how we will get on, then we can look back in 9 months or so and see how accurate we all were.

I propose us predicting the Champions, Play offs and where we think Boston (Pilgrims FC) will finish.

Champions - Barrow
Plays offs - Tamworth, Guiseley, Harrogate, Chorley
Boston - 12th

This is on the basis of big spending, previous good finishes and the fact that normally one of the promoted teams at least will finish in the play offs.  Whereas I have real concerns about our forward line especially Newsham's fitness, the balance of the midfield with no real replacement for Ross or Agnew (at time of writing) and have a nagging feeling that Pidge will be gone by Xmas citing the travel from Uni in Manchester as a problem a la Holsgrove (really hope that i am wrong about that).

Think 12th is about bob on for Boston - our squad is weaker and the league appears stronger.

I never felt Dennis got the midfield sorted last year and that was the main reason we missed out on the playoffs, I dont see thats this has improved either.Goal scoring will be our problem and Dennis please listen - Garner isn't a striker, hes strong, physically fit but wont get us 20 goals a season.

Champions - Tamworth
Playoffs - Guiseley, Hednesford, Barrow, Harrogate

Boston 9th to 11th,

the league looks a lot tougher this year and we have a hard start
against league 3, an idiots guide to making the rich richer and the poor poorer.

I agree around 12th. division is much much stronger and we are weaker, lacking a goalscorer with newshs injury and ricky leaving.

Champs- Not really sticking my neck out but Barrow have all the resources they need to win it
Playoffs- Tamworth, Ferriby, Harrogate, Us

Heart says Us to sneak 5th on the last day, pipping Guiseley and showing them how to win the playoffs
Head says an ultimately futile bid at the playoffs, ending 8th and 5 or 6 pts short again

If you want my 3 to go down, Oxford, Lowestoft and Stalybridge

Champs: Harrogate

Play-offs: Stockport, Stalybridge, Tamworth, Fylde

Expect us to finish about 8th (unless DG finds another good striker).

I think at 11/4 and with a alleged £20K+ budget a week (and on poxy crowds) if Barrow don't win the league heads will certainly roll, but like others I think if we don't get off to a good start we will struggle, the first half a dozen games will tell us everything we need to know. We will also struggle if Newsh's injury lasts any more than a couple of weeks and or we don't sign another one.
Personally I think we will finish in the bottom half of the table (well clear of any danger I hasten to add) and the games of 3,4,5 goals will be in the minority.
My surprise package could be Oxford with Danny Nicholls in charge and the biggest fall from grace, Brackley now that their endless pit of money has apparently dried up.

Lets hope i am crap at predictions!  ;D

Hope your crap BG .    Many seem doom mongers at the moment , is it early season nerves ?
Think we are fine at the back .   Much depends on how Gledhill ,Southwell and Felix do .  if they do well and we get Newsham back fit things will look hopeful .
And remember Den may work a bit of magic as the season goes along .

Just got back from counting my gold bars in Switzerland. All this gloom and doom --whats going on. Other sides will have to gel as well so lets see what happens.

No idea who will be top this year, or in play offs, and I have not seen any of the pre season games, but when you lose to Spalding and Gainsboro in pre season, thats not good. Seems we play ok against the boys from league teams, but when faced with BS houses and tough old seasoned players from the north we cant hack it. Must not upset Dennis again, but on paper we appear lightweight, with limited options up front. From what I saw of Garner last year, he is a v good central defender but not a centre forward, so come on DG get your finger out and get another forward pdq.

First 6 games look tough to me, but I will be predicting a slender win on Saturday. Lets get positive

It is obvious to all that we still need a top quality CM and CF. However these rarely come cheap and DG has known this since he tried to get Sleath and Mettam in May. If and how so we bring in the quality we are still missing could depend on how well our season goes. We well also be alot stronger once Newsham, Felix and Dowie are all in the 11.

I don't think Felix will be first choice, at least not to start with. McGhee will be our number 1 right-winger, with Felix often used off the bench in the last 20 minutes?
