Title: Oh so quiet.....

Hoping I can jinx a late Friday signing announcement by moaning about how it's been completely dead on the that front all week....! C'mon, just one... *CROSSES FINGERS*

I won't spout names on here but I've been told from a very reliable source we have what I'd describe as a big marquee player (old boy dropping out of the pro game who had a successful year last season) signing the dotted line on Monday and there is an ex player returning (had a consistent couple of years at NLN level) who has already signed and will be announced in due course.

As expected Billy Chadwick won't be returning as he has offers from Grimsby, Harrogate and Scunny.

I'd go to Grimsby, decent manager there.

Oh so true.
For me, this is potentially a massive signing. Hugely experienced, has lots of honours, massively popular at every club he's played for.

Yep, you got it!

Another one signed and waiting to be announced who has played for us before under previous management and been consistent at NLN level for the last two years with other clubs. First name begins with J!

Too easy! I've got another which I'll put out in a couple of days if the club haven't already announced it by then. Will make it incredibly hard to guess!

Bostwick is a potentially massive signing but then again, how many times have we had our fingers burned by potentially massive signings dropping out of the FL? That being said, he has enjoyed huge success as a player so this time it does feel a bit different! A very impressive statement of intent.

McLintock signs, now just for Pollock.

McLintock has tons of potential - still a very "raw" player who very much lacked consistency last season, but he could blossom under the hybrid system.

The official website describes him as "highly rated", although looking through various tweets and replies to the news yesterday the only person I could see really raving about him was his mum.

Okay, I'm being a bit facetious - there were a few "some player!" type tweets, but we saw them last season for the absolute dross we brought in so I'm no longer getting excited about signings based off tweets alone!

It's going to be a really interesting pre-season because let's be honest, aside from a few of the NL stats gurus, none us have any clue how good these players actually are until we see them in the flesh and they get a few games under Cully under their belts. And I even include Bostwick in that, because stepping down to the NLN from the Football League doesn't automatically guarantee success.

I'm pretty optimistic though, the players coming in might be young but they're at the age where they're not completely naïve, have bags of energy and potential, and mixed with some experienced heads for a long old season I want to believe we're going to be an exciting outfit to watch.

(Just don't remind me of this when we're 5-0 down to Spenny first game of the season...)

The official website describes every signing as 'highly rated' so I think you can dismiss that as simply Craig's go to phrase for any signing.

5 goals in 45 games from midfield isn't startling, but what we don't see are his his assists, tackles or possession stats, thats more important for a midfielder.

But some of our lot make me laugh, every signing is hailed as a great coup, the 'I remember him from the game last season, he was their best player'........absolute garbage........lets give the kid a chance, he can't be any worse than some of the absolute whoppers we got lumbered with last summer.

And yes, his mum does seem very happy, as does his girlfriend, they've probably seen our VIP facilities.....
Title: Re: Oh so quiet.....
Post by: Oakham Pilgrim on June 13, 2023, 09:32:17 AM
Hype is true. Looking at other sites, it seems that every player signing for a club at our level is 'highly rated', they have 'fought off' many other offers (often from clubs at higher levels) and are delighted to get it 'over the line'. I'm not a cynic, of course. But it looks as if we are assembling a group of young players (with sensible experienced additions) who I hope will produce an attractive and energetic brand of football. That will do for me at the moment.

The encouraging thing is that doesn't tell the whole story, conceded a lot of goals until Cameron Gregory arrived and since then the goals conceded were low. And he is staying for next season. Also helped that we did have a more consistent defense in front of him towards the end of the season able to name the same back 4 most weeks with Sephton arriving too and Sheils back from injury.

Not going to lose too much sleep over it tbh - Pollock won POTS almost by default by virtue of being an ever present in an otherwise chaotic season for player turnover! In any normal season he'd probably not have had a sniff. Solid player, sure, but not irreplaceable.

Exactly that! It was more a process of elimination than anything else. Like I say, he's a good player and I'd have been more than okay with him staying, but he didn't want to so we move on. It's not a calamity.

Thought he was quite poor in the first half of the season and was surprised he wasn't shipped out like a lot of Cox's signings. He did improve later on but still not in Shiels class. Was also surprised he won so many awards at the end of the season but having done so just like at Hereford  and after saying he would like to stay here next season, he moves on. Although he comes from that area I'm not sure he is on very good terms with the word loyalty. No great loss. We can do better.

I did ask some Hereford fans about Pollock and him winning their POTS award in 21/22 and they replied to the effect that "it wasn't hard to win it in that team!" - bit like at Boston!

The Pilgrims are rumoured to be in for Aaron Jones from Kings Lynn, who was in the NLN team of the year for 22/23 season. The Lynn News the local rag down there are also reporting he is leaving and heading down the A17 to Boston. Another decent signing I think.

I know I am an half full glass kinda guy, but I am quietly confident we will do well this season Andy. I think the best signing so far is the keeper.  We need about three more players to complete the jigsaw. A striker or two are a must in my opinion.

Its what the club want

Not promotion though sadly, I'm resigned to us being in this league for years.

I feel like we're stuck in the same kind of rut as we were in the mid 90s, when we had good teams and could beat anyone at home on the day, but rarely could sustain a genuine title challenge.

Of course, non-league has changed a lot since those days, when we could expect to be there or thereabouts almost by default - but now we're having to fight ever harder against the tide of money flowing into our level.

Sure, improved finances have allowed us to move to this new hybrid model, but honestly the recruitment doesn't feel much more exciting than any other season, perhaps Bostwick aside. Hopefully we'll have more positive news on the recruitment front this week or next.

I’m guessing with the squad numbers reveal that we are still looking for a right back although with the 9 and 10 shirts taken, no main centre forward (back up though). Or am I placing too much importance on the 1-11 numbers?

New forward from Chesterfield, Michael Gyasi. Used to play under Cully at Lynn

As I understand it Cully never gave him a run in the starting eleven so hopefully he has improved in Cullys eyes and is not just making up the numbers.

Was not a regular in Gloucester team either last season.

..... although I've seen references suggesting that although fans rated him he didn't get as many chances to play as they would have liked (at Chesterfield too). Given that Cully has worked with him, I can only assume he knows what he's getting and how best to use him. I can't see why he would have signed him otherwise.

He was only on loan there, in 2 separate spells. Was better in the first loan than the second

One of his goals last season...
