Luke Shiels .
-
Excellent signing.
-
Quality that's for sure.
Well done Craig and Craig.
-
I see that CE has said that he is "the leader we have been after for a while", is this hinting at a possible captaincy role for him next season?
-
Looks a very good signing that

Could well be, think George might not be automatic first choice.

Shield got 7 yellow and 1 red card.this season. Another Middleton?
-
Excellent signing.
One of Alfreton's avid supporters who contributes to the 'onefootballforum' wholeheartedly agrees:-
Alfreton captain and Supporters Player of the season Luke Shiels has signed for Boston United.
Huge loss for us. Quality centre back at this level.

Without having seen him play - but based on 2018/2019 stats and how we have all seen the way Middleton conducts himself on the pitch - I wouldn't think so.
Ken's stats shows that Ben made 22 appearances in 2018/2019 and had 6 yellow cards and 2 red cards.
Luke Shiels made 36 appearances and received, as you state, 7 yellow cards and 1 red card (do we know how this came about, was if this was two yellows or a straight red?) I don't really believe that 7 yellows in 36 games for a central defender is excessive, especially given how easily refs produce them these days.
The rate at which Ben was picking up cards, had he made 36 appearances he was 'on target' for 3 or 4 more yellows and another red. And we know that most of his are as a result of some reckless tackles, and often quite stupid decision making. 10 yellows and 3 reds in 36 appearances probably would be counted as bordering on excessive.
I suppose we'll soon see though after a few matches if Shiels is another Middleton, or simply a hard robust defender more in the Pearson / Pidge mould. If he is - or even if he's just a little below their standard - I'm sure we'll not be too concerned with getting 7 yellows over the course of the season.

i may be wrong, but Paul Ellender once got 18 yellows in a season. that didn't make him a bad defender, nor a liability, did it? just a committed player. let's hope for another like him...

Midfielder Tom Platt joins us from Alferton.
Welcome Tom to Boston.
-
Well said - Ellender was a god!

Very feasible. As long as defenders (or anyone) aren't consistently getting a 2nd booking during a game, it's fine. I'd expect central defenders to be suspended at least once during a season for accumulation of bookings.
-
Not a bad summary, Scotty. As you say, as long as not a second booking each game. Am I correct (and you will know the answer to this) but Ellender only received one Red Card during his brilliant and lengthy stay with The Pilgrims?
-
I remember Ellender giving a very dubious penalty away at Scunthorpe. It was the same match were Bazza saved on the line, but the goal was awarded even thou his body obstructed the view.
I remember both incidents being shown on Sky, and the studio pundits in disbelief at both decisions.
Paul was a solid but sometimes clumsy defender, but I would put him in the BUFC legend class.

Jon Parking released by York.
Would any of you take a chance on a experienced centre forward/target man??
-
Not him - way too fat. Were you at York ?
Ah wait a minute, he assisted both of their goals !
TEP
-
I was at York, but he looked way too immobile for the way we play. Granted he's a big unit. I'd prefer Denton every day of the week. But he'd never forgive the Town End for past remarks.

I don't know if he has been released from Chester, l have been looking to see if he has, but can't find anything.
I am sure Tom would forgive us, if the money was right.

No l wasn't, but he has always been a big chap but still scored goals.
I personally think l would not go for him.

They don't come much bigger than the 'beast' at Wycombe, he's still knocking them in. ;)

Must say that not overly impressed with signings so far as two have come from Alfreton who finished about 7 points behind us!! Yes they have experience of this league but does that mean that they are not good enough to improve us?
I really hope they turn out to be legends for us and let's face it it can't be a worse season at home than last. All I really hope for is that the home fans have something to cheer.
Looking forward to August.

Surely going for players who have had experience in our league is better than going for players from such places as Shaw Lane.

Not all players are poor just because they come from a team that finishes lower than us.
You could say that about us as a club, for instance would you say Jay Rollins, George Willis, and Nicky Walker are not good enough to play at other clubs because they play for us.

Depends what the buying clubs ambition is.
If they want to tread water in mid table then they'll do a job.
If they want to push on for promotion then I think they'd be disappointed.
I'm in the 'reserving judgement' camp on the current signing, experience of this level is important, but if that experience is 'doing a mid table job' then I fear York St won't get the send off it really deserves.

"Can't say I'm impressed with signing this defender who helped get Corby relegated"
(Carl Piergianni anyone?)

Moussa Sissoko and Gini Wijnaldum will be playing against each other in the Champions League final - both signed for their clubs from a relegated Newcastle side.
-
Let’s face it we all know better that’s why we’re paying for a season ticket 🎫 and not sat under cover on the side of the pitch 😂

Newcastle sold the pair for a combined total of 53 million. A meagre profit of 30 odd million for the hard up Mike Ashley.
-
I see John Stead has been released by Notts County, I know he is the wrong side of 30, but an excellent target man he would be.
I don't know if he would drop down this far, but saying that Ben Davis did.
