Now lets have a bit of fun after all the doom and gloom recently.
Who would be in your top six defenders of all time at BUFC
Here are mine,
Paul Ellander,
Steve Thompson
Paul Shirtlif
Rene Steer
Shaun Pearson
Zak Mills.
Please don't criticize peoples choices, these are just personal choices, it will be interesting to see what names pop up from the past.
-
In my day, Martin Hardy, Gregg Fee, Paul Casey, Paul Shirtlif.
Later, Stewart Balmer, Paul Ellander, Rene Steer, Pidge, Zak Mills.
No doubt by the time this is read, I could add more.
-
Dave Adamson
-
Alan White White White.
-
How about "Dusty" Miller if you are over 70 !?

How about "Dusty" Miller if you are over 70 !?
Remember him well !!! Even in the depth of winter Dave,s shirt was soaked in sweat after 10mins, play but he was still going strong for 90mins .
Also remember Bertie Wilson :dan
-
Keith Jobling.......Billy Howells......tough as old boots...

In nearly 50 years of watching Worksop Phil "The Animal" Annable & Martin Hardy is my favourite centre half pairing we have had.
Last season I saw an Annable in goal for AFC Retford, I was told it was Phil Annable's nephew.
-
Dave Adamson and Phil Jones
-
Defences v Portsmouth in '72 and Derby away '74 were pretty tight .
-
In no particular order then for me it's:-
Paul Ellender
Martin Hardy
Stuart Balmer
Alan White
Colin Hoyle
Greg Fee
Paul Casey
Gareth Jelleyman
-
Paul Ellender, Paul Shirtliffe, Martin Hardy, Alan White, and more recently Pidge, Zak Mills, and Liam Marrs. Remember being saddened to hear of Shirts death a few years ago, only early fifties I believe
-
Need to include Ian wood in this list in my opinion?
-
Billy Howells and Alan White are two names that immediately come to mind, even though from very different eras.
-
I need to put Ray Warburton and Neil Thomson in too
-
Slight twist on the subject, but hardest, toughest, s.o.b., Martin Filson has to take it.
-
as a schoolboy I vividly remember watching DON DONOVAN play for BUFC. He was a tough tackling defender, very commanding in the air..a real physical presence. He would be my choice.Donovan played many times for Everton and Republic of Ireland...
-
Did Warburton partner Jim Rodwell, or am I mistaken.
-
THE best defender of all time has to be Paul Ellender. Leader, captain of our Conference winning side, was with BUFC throughout our time in the Football League and even played for us during our first two seasons in Regional Non-League football. Legend! Shirtliff, Pearson and Casey are 3 other great defenders to join him.
-
Has everyone forgotten Dick Bates, surely he must be at the top of the list!
-
Dick Bate ..solid in most big games 72-74
Could do with someone like him now.

True Ted , not sure people who lived in Spayne Rd in 72-73 would agree with you and Ernie . ;)

HOOF

?
Dick kicks for touch were what years later we wished Billy Howells had emulated at St Albans . Emphatic , and a danger to windows in adjacent areas .
-
OK ..I frequented the Spayne half way in those days .
Remember criticising Mr Hardy for the muffed clearance on the infant Patter .
And got slagged off ..probably by you 2 :blank:
-
I would say mine are
Mychaljo "Mike" Czuczman
Arthur Mann
Martin Hardy
Paul Shirtliff
Peter Wythe
Paul Ellender
Bill Howells
Gordon Bolland
John Lakin
Martin "the animal" Filson
-
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Pidge. We have certainly missed him this season.
-
I'm surprised nobody as mentioned Freddy Taylor we signed from Gainsborough , one of the best left backs we have had over the years.
-
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Les MacJannet, oh wait, sorry, no offense intended, but Les may be doesn't quite make the list! Led our backline out of the Conference, just not in the right direction!
-
I remember an aerial photo York street on the front of the old fanzine mag, with a caption saying
"Birds Eye View of a Martin Hardy clearance" 😁
-
Martins shooting and passing was featured quite a lot in Behind your fences 😂😂😂
-
Paul Casey

Many thanks to all who took part in this
, nice to see many old but not forgotten players.
