New striker Richard Brodie just announced on twitter and is eligible to play immediately. Aged 29 and 6'2 and had lots of clubs.

My summation of that glorified pre season game? The players need more time to regain match fitness and sharpness.

Hilliard and Marshall in central midfield did not work. At all. Both slowed the game down and didn't inject any pace into attacks and didn't look to have the tactical nous to play all phases in the that position. I was disappointed but not entirely suprised by the lack of effectiveness in front of goal considering we are only a couple weeks into pre season with more weeks before the season kicks off, but with time they will find the back of the net and there could be some real quality in our front line, there have been flashes of brilliance and then periods of ineptitude.

A key gripe i had from today, with time ticking away, why persist with something that isn't working? We had Green and Adams as trialists on the bench who are fighting to get into the team, they could have offered a spark to create a chance. I'm not fussed we've lost but more disappointed with some performances, but there is time to iron mistakes out (for example the multitude of mistakes that led to their goal) and get the team gelling together, which seems to be our main weakness at the minute.

Oh well, will be there Tuesday to see how we fare and see if there is any tangible improvement in our play, which there probably will be. Up the Pilgrims!

Evident from Saturday for me was the fact that we had two strikers on the pitch that were working effectively in tandem. Sands would run and pressure he opposition and whenever the ball was played into him (on the floor or in the air) he would hold the ball up and look for the movement of Southwell, evident from the chance early in the game (and the identical move later in the first half which took Southwell a bit wider of the goal) which didn't quite settle for Southwell to finish. From that display I can't see how either Jones or Robbins can be rated so highly that they go straight into that strike force. I don't think Sands is the best ST in the league by a long shot but he offers significantly more than either Jones or Robbins, in terms of work rate, awareness and general team play. He won headers, held the ball up and did everything you ask for from a ST with his skillset, especially playing alongside Southwell who will feed off him a lot.

Also, the sooner the awful set piece routines are kicked out the better, we have a strong aerial presence and decide to work the ball into the box from tight angles. Waste so many good opportunities from set pieces its unbelievable.

Well from today's game a lot stood out for the wrong reasons. Some of the players in that team today aren't good enough for this level of football. Apart from a couple of powerful runs and some headers, Ngamvoulou did nothing for me, this wasn't helped by playing in a midfield three including Venney who doesn't seem ready for this level of football, he showed glimpses of some technical ability but for the majority couldn't influence the game. The game today was lost in midfield. Stalybridge had powerful and physical players who looked like they were far more tactically aware when compared to ours, with gaps being left all over the shop for them to exploit (which they did).

Burgess for me did okay, considering he is CB playing RB on his debut. He made a couple of mistakes yes but all players were guilty of that today, some more than others. He looked to receive the ball constantly and won his far share of aerial duels, tracking back well throughout the game.

I feel for Spiess, he should have done a lot better with the second goal but it remains to be seen whether the ball bobbled or didn't bounce how he expected it too, but we'll have to wait and see. He still made some good saves behind a defence and midfield that at times were easy to play through.

The team looked all over the place, especially in the second half, and didn't look like they understood how they were set up to play, sometimes going direct to Jones (who was ineffectual for most of the game) or retaining possession, with a chronic lack of width hampering this style of play all game. Until it finally showed up in the last 10 minutes. We looked like we lacked ideas especially after going 2-0 down and looking to get ourselves back into the game. The lack of plan B to change the game was ridiculous. There were 3 strikers on the bench but instead we put Garner upfront?! We have Sands, Johnson and Lavelle-Moore yet we put the CB up there, with two subs remaining... that is simply ludicrous. When considering that Jones was isolated for large swathes of the game, putting a supporting striker on would have given us another option and gives Stalybridge something else to worry about.

Credit has to be given to them for the way they played, because their gameplan worked to a tee. The time wasting was absurd however, not helped by the incompetence of the referee who always seems to have a shocking display whenever he is down for one of our games.

Overall a very bad day at the office, which are happening a bit too often.

If Football Managers research for Boston is correct then Zak Mills is also German.

May be nothing but at the North Ferriby game, we were stood by him when he was warming up Ravas. When he kicked the ball to him during a crossing warm up he winced twice and tried to stretch out something in his leg so from that would guess he isn't 100% fit

The B-Ark / Re: Well that was disappointing

That performance overall was disappointing, the RB, Richards, was MOTM. Mills did okay, as did Dowie and Sarpong. This team concede goals because the centre of midfield isn't good enough (Garner is not a CM and Dowie isn't good enough, yes he did alright today but that was a first. Passing is dreadful, positional sense is lacking and his timing is abysmal.) and Piergianni isn't an intelligent defender, who tries to go through the back of someone going to the corner flag? (look at how many of his bookings have come from stupid tackles/decisions.)

Going forward we didn't really offer much until Rollins came on and added some directness, how Greene stayed on for so long is beyond me, he couldn't beat his man all day. Walker was poor in the final third, especially when trying to play the killer ball to Greene, Sarpong or Southwell. What doesn't help is that all those players don't make helpful or intelligent runs and just run toward goal expecting the ball to be played in front of them.... not going to happen.

When Rollins and Dixon came on we looked okay and actually tested their keeper, however relying on Garner to fill in positions all through the spine of the team concerns me. He's not a striker and he's not a midfielder and it shows (He plays box to box and as soon as the attacking play breaks down he's caught the wrong side and struggles to get back into a defensive position.) It just begs the question why players weren't signed for those positions in the summer.

On the whole very disappointing, the team selection worried me and when the first goal was conceded there was no sign of a change, to be honest I don't understand how there wasn't a change sooner after half time considering how certain players performed in the first half. Rollins and Dixon have to start next game, no questions asked.

On to Gainsborough.

Agreed, good result and a good performance to go with it. Could've been more decisive but overall did well, thought Dowie and Meadows were brilliant in the middle. However think the wide midfielders just need to track back more and help defensively because its all too often to see teams overload the wings and get crosses in. All in all though a step in the right direction, onto the Cup!

Why? He only goes where the money is and is no upgrade to the current squad...

According to article on the Target website he wasn't offered a permanent contract so is looking elsewhere as he wants security. Apparently he has had offers from other clubs in Conference North and been offered a trial at a Conference Premier club. Pre-season is all about finding players that will add to the team so let's not panic yet.
