Boston United Roll Call

Here is a list of "Pilgrims" I have put together from my rather sparse collection of match programmes going back to 1968 along with a few "Non League Club Directories", the "Ultimate Book of Non-League Players", a trawl through back issues of the Boston Guardian and the Lincolnshire Standard at Boston Library, and some magazine articles. Thanks also to Dave Baines, Howard Lincoln, Bryan Scotney, Colin Woodcock, Geoff Snade, Richard Burton, Aidan Jones, Craig Singleton, Mick Lord, Roger Combes, Alan Ashton, Farne Hunt, Greger Lindberg, Stephen Bell, Leigh Edwards, Dave Wherry and Rob Briggs for helping with some additions. I have also started to put in season by season statistics for each player (Just 33/4, 53/4, 54/5, 56/7 to 58/9, 66/7, 72/3, 73/4, 75/6, 76/7, 77/8 and 79/80 to 06/7 so far!). These include appearances + appearances as substitute and goals scored in each competition. There are probably quite a few gaps and mistakes so if you want to add anything to the list (nothing libellous please!) then just send me an E-Mail (ken@drfox.org.uk). I hope some of the names bring back a few happy memories for you.

Nathan Abbey Goalkeeper (04-05) Nathan Abbey joined Boston in July 2004 to provide cover for Paul Bastock. However his pre-season performances led to him ousting Boston's record breaker and taking over as the first choice keeper. In the following season he became the first choice keeper for the Hatters. In 2001 he joined Chesterfield on a free transfer for one season, then he switched to Northampton Town. For the 2003/4 season he had spells with Stevenage Borough, Luton Town, Macclesfield Town, Ipswich Town and Burnley. Chris Cook Forward (79-91,92-98) Local lad who forced his way into the first team squad with his goal-scoring exploits in the reserve team in the Lincolnshire League. Helped with the maintenance of the York Street ground. Featured on BBC "Match of the Day" during the Pilgrims' televised FA Cup tie at home to Sheffield United in December 82. Scored the Pilgrims' goal in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley in 1985. Voted "Player of the Year" in 86/87 after becoming top scorer with 27 goals. Toured Holland and Hungary with the Middlesex Wanderers in the summer of 89. Chris was granted a testimonial in the 89-90 season. He eventually left York Street for spells with Altrincham, King's Lynn and Boston Town before "coming home" to jointly manage the newly established reserve team in 1992. However midway through the 94-95 season, he made a fairytale return to first team action scoring the winner in a 1-0 away win at Matlock. From then on he saw regular first team action until he hung up his boots to become the club's youth development officer in 1998. In the 95/96 season he added a further 18 goals to his tally and was voted "Player of the Year" again. Appointed assistant manager for the start of the 96/97 season. Coached the Boston United Academy youth team for a couple of seasons before moving on to become "Director of Football" with Holbeach United. Chris is the club's all time leading goalscorer with 181 goals to his credit in over 400 appearances. Born 19/5/1962 in Tidworth, Hampshire.
