Ellender clears

Bury 2-1 Pilgrims

Coca-Cola League

Another away game and another pointless trip as Steve Evans became the first manager of a Boston United team to lose to lowly Bury. Even Neil Thompson never lost to Bury. With Lee Canoville still out, Simon Rusk came into the side as a makeshift right back. Francis Green came back after his suspension and injury and Brad Maylett made it on to the subs' bench - his first appearance since mid-August. The first half was fairly dull, in contrast to the bright October sun shining behind the Boston goal. Goal scoring chances at either end were few and far between. On ten minutes a foul on Anthony Elding gave Boston a free kick just outside the area and David Galbraith forced Kasper Schmeichel - the son of former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel - to tip to ball over the bar with his dipping kick. A long range effort by Marc Pugh then went wide of Marriott's post. A few minutes before half time Elding broke free and fired his shot goalwards, but again Schmeichel was able to tip the ball over. With twenty minutes left and the match looking like ending goalless, Bury scored out of the blue.

Paul Scott crossed the ball from the right and Glynn HURST directed it past Marriott from close range. Two minutes later Bury doubled their lead. A poor clearance by Marriott went straight to a Bury player allowing Andy Bishop to break forward before delivering a perfect pass to Marc PUGH who prodded the ball home at the back post. Paul TAIT was now brought on for Richie Ryan and he made an immediate impact by forcing the ball home after getting on the end of a cross by Chris Holland. It made for an exciting finish as Boston sought an equaliser, but they just didn't have the firepower to get one. As the match drew to a close the heavens opened producing a short but heavy downpour. There must have been a rainbow somewhere in Bury, but there was no pot of gold at the end for Boston. After the match Steve Evans said nothing, as he skulked away refusing to speak to BBC Radio Lincolnshire after what could be his last away game before incarceration.
