Torquay United 0-0 Pilgrims

Coca Cola League

Despite the encouragement of a large crowd at the Plainmoor Ground as Torquay sought to ensure League Two survival, there was very little in the way of goalmouth action in the opening minutes. Boston had Mark Greaves back from injury and he swapped places with last week's injury victim David Galbraith. Brad Maylett also came back into the starting line-up at the expense of Peter Till. The first real chance of the match didn't arrive until the 20th minute and it fell to Paul Ellender who had come forward for a free kick, but his free header was just wide of the upright. Apart from a few corners and the odd free kick, there wasn't any further action in the first half that looked like it would result in the deadlock being broken. At the start of the second half Torquay came close to scoring with their first effort on target when Conrad Logan had to make a diving save to keep out a driven free kick taken by Stephen Reed.

Ellender had another scoring chance on the hour when he was picked out by a Jamie Clarke corner, but again he headed wide. Chris Holland soon had a crack at goal but Andy Marriott was able to make a save. Torquay missed a golden opportunity to take the lead when a cross by Lee Thorpe found its way through to Danny Hollands who contrived to miss the target from ten yards out. Boston won a free kick just outside the area and Jamie Clarke curled his effort just too high with the keeper beaten. The match fizzled out to its conclusion with both sides happy with the point. For Torquay it meant they avoided relegation and for Boston it gave them their highest finishing points total since joining the League.
