BRSA Retford 2-6 Reserves

Lincolnshire League

Report by Colin Woodcock

Against BRSA Retford, United fielded a relatively young side with Childs, Kiwomya and Melson having been called into the first team squad. Opening brightly, they took the lead after five minutes through Steve APPLEBY who drilled home a twenty yard free kick. Further chances went begging and BRSA hit back to equalise with their first real foray into the United box. This appeared to unsettle United and the home side quickly added a second inside two minutes to take a surprise lead. Captain Steve APPLEBY, beginning to look something like his old self, however took the game by the scruff of the neck and equalised from another free kick with thirty yard screamer into the bottom corner. Gary PAWSON put United back in front forcing the ball home after Neil Timby's header had rebounded off the bar.

Right on half-time, Danny DACK gave United a two goal cushion with a brave diving header from a Steve Appleby cross. After the break, BRSA were more physical in their approach but to no avail as further goals followed from Leigh TAYLOR, forcing home a loose ball after Dack's shot had rebounded from the keeper, and Anthony ELDING, who got a final touch on Dack's goal bound shot. In midfield, young Andy Markham put in an impressive performance whilst Steve Appleby is again emerging as a powerhouse in the centre.
