Appleby Frodingham 1-2 Reserves

Lincolnshire League

Report by Colin Woodcock

On Saturday, United travelled to play Appleby Frodingham, who are always well organised and physical in their approach to the game. United brought in Casey, Hardy, Appleby, Melson and Timby to give the line up some much needed cutting edge that had been missing in midweek. The home side opened strongly and Appleby twice made goal line clearances before United eventually took the lead on twenty minutes when Mark MELSON bundled home the loose ball after his initial shot had been charged down. More good chances went begging as first Walters and then Taylor had chances to increase United's lead but no goals followed before the break. After the restart, United's wealth of experience began to tell and they dominated the game with Casey and Appleby outstanding.

However the home side managed to equalise from a direct free on sixty five minutes but this spurred United on even more as Timby hit the post and saw another good effort well saved. Two appeals for penalties were turned down and against all the odds, the match looked destined for draw. Three minutes in injury time however, good play between Walters and Taylor saw the latter thread an inch perfect pass through to Mark MELSON inside the box. Melson collected the ball and rode a crushing tackle before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball home for a goal of the highest quality to give United the points. Manager John Luffman enthused at length over his team's performance, singling out Melson for particular praise. It has to be said, he scores most weeks, just how much more does he have to do!
