Pilgrims 4-2 Scunthorpe United

Avon Insurance League

by Craig Singleton

Four stunning goals sealed another impressive win for Boston United Reserves on Monday evening. The Pilgrims were 4-2 victors in the Avon Insurance League Division One East encounter with Scunthorpe United Reserves and turned in a solid performance in the process. On-loan Ipswich midfielder Rob Dickinson was the star of the show, scoring two excellent goals and laying on another. James Gould and Simon Weatherstone were also on target as Boston romped to a comfortable victory. Boston fielded trialists Olivier Brassart (from Scarborough) and Oge Sylva, the latter playing only 45 minutes after an ineffective first half display. The Pilgrims went in front in the ninth minute when DICKINSON weaved his way inside two men before dispatching a low curling shot into the net via the inside of the post, leaving Adam Capp stranded. Boston were restricted to just two other notable first half chances. Dickinson blazed a 25-yarder narrowly over while David Town's volley was gathered by Capp following Gould's centre. However, Scunthorpe equalised on the stroke of half-time when Nick Conroy was adjudged to have pulled down Andrew Brown.

Andy PARTON stepped up to convert from the penalty spot to send the teams in all square at the interval. Boston were back in front in the 52nd minute when GOULD lashed home a thunderous 25-yarder which gave Capp no chance whatsoever. He had seized possession after Weatherstone's corner was only partially cleared by the Iron defence. Dickinson drilled another 20-yard effort over the crossbar, while Town forced Capp into a low scrambling save before Peter Costello saw a header palmed away by the visiting goalkeeper. But Boston extended their lead on 77 minute when DICKINSON exquisitely drilled home his second from 20 yards after another fine twisting run through the Scunthorpe rearguard. And a minute later, Dickinson turned provider when he dinked a ball over the top for WEATHERSTONE to latch onto and smash a rising effort into the roof of the net to make the score 4-1. Scunthorpe replied by snatching a second in the 86th minute when James COTTERILL poked the loose ball home following Parton's corner. And Conroy was forced into two smart saves late on, both from substitute Russell Penn, as the Iron sought a late consolation, but Boston held on to claim another memorable second string win.
