Reserves 4-2 Barton Town Old Boys

Lincolnshire League

Report by Colin Woodcock

United Reserves went into Saturday's table-topping clash still unbeaten and looking to extend the gap between themselves and second placed Barton Town. In the opening minutes, United's pace visibly upset the visitors and it seemed only a matter of time before United scored, but, as so often is the case, the opposite happened when Barton scored. The equaliser was not long in coming with Gary PAWSON flicking home a Gary Walter's cross at the near post. Barton though were playing their part in possibly the best Lincs League game seen at York Street for several seasons and they again went in front before the break. After the interval, United laid seige to the visitors' goal with an equaliser coming on 50 minutes through Mark MELSON, who side-footed home a cross from the hugely impressive Walters.

This led to even more intense pressure on the Barton goal with Boston keeper Lee Crew only making one save of consequence during the whole of the second half. Walters was enthralling the healthy crowd with a superb display of wing trickery and it was Walters who set up substitute Ross NICHOLLS with the chance to hammer the ball into the roof of the net with 10 minutes to go. Oozing confidence, United then went looking for the killer goal and when it came what a goal it was - Nicky REESON thundering his shot past the Barton keeper from 10 yards.
